When four million crocuses turn the castle park violet
The crocus bloom in the park of Schloss vor Husum is considered one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Northern Germany. Around four million violet spring crocuses (Crocus napolitanus) bloom simultaneously every year between late February and mid-March, bathing the castle park in a continuous violet hue — an image that has earned Husum the nickname "Mauveville." The origin of the crocus bulbs dates back to the 16th century: they are said to have been originally planted by monks for saffron production — which was not commercially successful because the crocus species growing here yields the wrong type of saffron. The bulbs remained, multiplied, and are now a botanical heritage of the town.
Since 2001, Tourismus und Stadtmarketing Husum GmbH has chosen a Crocus Blossom Queen every year — a young woman from Husum who represents the town at events for one year. The crowning of the new queen by her predecessor takes place on Saturday of the festival at 11 AM on the steps of the Old Town Hall on the market square — the traditional start of the weekend. Afterwards, the new queen accompanies visitors through the festival weekend and is available for photos and encounters.
In the historic castle courtyard — right where the crocus bloom originated — a high-quality arts and crafts market takes place during the festival. Exhibitors offer jewelry with a maritime theme, cashmere knitwear, leather goods, garden ceramics, and regional specialties such as game ham and homemade cheese. The market is intentionally not large but curated — those who sell here are invited.
The program surrounding the crocus bloom is spread throughout the city center: themed tours through the old town, the Husum Neustadt, and in the footsteps of Theodor Storm; costumed castle garden tours with the "last court gardener," who tells the story of the crocus bloom back to the 16th century; a culinary mile with regional specialties in Großstraße; and on Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM, Sunday shopping in Husum's city center.
Husum, with around 23,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of Nordfriesland and is primarily known as the birthplace of the poet Theodor Storm — who described the town as a "grey town by the sea" in his famous poem "Die Stadt." The Crocus Blossom Festival is the spectacular antithesis to this image: once a year, the grey turns into a vibrant violet that attracts thousands of visitors from all over Northern Germany. The crocus bloom is now one of Husum's best-known tourist attractions, alongside the Theodor Storm House and the harbor.
The 2026 Crocus Blossom Festival follows the established program: Saturday is dedicated to the crowning and the castle park, Sunday to Sunday shopping and the culinary mile. The event is organized by Tourismus und Stadtmarketing Husum GmbH in cooperation with Husum retailers.
