Volunteer-run since 1983 – Munich's southern free open-air festival
What began in 1983 with a few high school students from Gauting has become one of the most traditional and unusual festivals in the southern Munich area. The association Kulturspektakel Gauting e.V. is run exclusively by volunteer youths and young adults who book bands, build stages, organize catering, and offer workshops. There is no festival management with permanent staff – that's part of the program.
Kulturspektakel is completely free of charge. This is possible because the municipality of Gauting, the district of Starnberg, the Bavarian Cultural Fund, federal cultural funding, and private donations co-finance the festival. In 2025, after weather-related losses, the association had to launch a donation campaign, which successfully raised €16,000 – a sign of how deeply rooted the festival is in its region.
On the grounds of the Gauting school campus (Germeringer Straße 41), there are four stages: the main stage, a second stage for emerging acts, an electronic floor, and an acoustic tent. Over 50 bands from pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, blues, jazz, and indie perform throughout the weekend. Accompanying events include workshops, art exhibitions, sports events, and a packed family program.
Many Bavarian bands got their first major stage here. The application process is open; in 2026, over 500 applications were received. A volunteer jury selects the lineup – without commercial headliner logic, without dictates from sponsors.
With its 43rd edition, Kulturspektakel opens again on the last weekend of July 2026. The headliner lineup features Von Welt, returning to Gauting ten years after their debut, alongside Bruchbude and Sonderpark. The full lineup will be completed by the festival start – over 500 band applications were received.
The festival offers a rich accompanying program: workshops on music, dance, and art, a children's area with interactive stations, sports events, an international food court with local vendors, and an open art market. The concept follows the association's ethos: culture for everyone, without entry barriers.
The full stage program is continuously updated on kulturspektakel.de.
