Six Weeks of Advent Christmas Market at the Tine Fountain
Husum is the hometown of Theodor Storm — and the poet described it as the 'grey town by the sea'. In Advent, the grey turns into a warm sea of lights: the gabled houses of the market square glow with atmospheric lighting, the decorated wooden stalls are grouped around the Tine Fountain — the town's landmark, with the sculpture of a shrimp peeler. Storm himself was a Christmas fan; his texts and poems about Advent continue to shape the atmosphere of the Wiehnachtstied to this day.
The focus is on a carefully curated mix of traditional handicrafts and regional gastronomy. At the stalls, you'll find North Frisian handicrafts — mudflat art, felt from the hinterland, ceramics, wood carvings, handmade candles. Alongside these are Christmas specialties: roasted almonds, gingerbread, lard pastries, Frisian 'Mehlbeutel' (flour dumplings), and of course mulled wine. It gets maritime with crab rolls, fish soup, and the Husum specialty 'Pharisäer' (coffee with rum and cream, a greeting from Friesland).
What makes the Husum market special is its unusually long season of six weeks — from the Sunday before the first Advent until December 27th. It is only closed on Totensonntag (Remembrance Sunday, November 22nd) and Christmas Day (December 25th). This makes Husum a destination for Advent cheer even after Christmas Eve — a hidden gem, especially during the quiet 'between the years' period.
Husum is the district capital of the North Frisia district in Schleswig-Holstein. The town is located directly on the Wadden Sea, which here — unlike on the islands — begins right at the harbor. Visitors to the market can round off their day with a winter walk along the outer harbor or a detour to the Theodor Storm House.
Throughout the season, regular stage programs take place at the market — performances by local choirs, brass bands, shanty ensembles, and occasional theater events for children. The complete program is announced by the Tourismus und Stadtmarketing Husum GmbH on the official market website — updates are provided during Advent. Additionally, Husum Tourism offers city tours 'In the Footsteps of Theodor Storm during Advent' and package deals 'Christmas Magic' (2 nights' accommodation + market from 245 Euros).
