48th charitable Christmas market on Marienplatz – proceeds for social institutions
The Charitable Christmas Market Freising is one of Upper Bavaria's best-known Christmas markets with a clear social profile: The proceeds from all stalls are donated to social institutions. This concept has been in place for decades and distinguishes the Freising market from purely commercial Christmas markets. The organizer is Aktive City Freising e.V., the city's inner-city marketing association.
The venue is the central Marienplatz with the large Christmas tree as the focal point. Around 50 craft stalls are grouped around the tree and spread through the surrounding alleys of Freising's old town. Additionally, there are markets in the Old Prison and on Domberg (Cathedral Hill) – both historic locations that contribute to the special atmosphere of the Advent weekend.
Throughout the weekend, the Freising Tower Brass players and other brass ensembles perform, providing musical accompaniment. During the Open Singing, market visitors sing Advent songs together. A highlight for children is the visit from St. Nicholas with small gifts.
Freising, with around 48,000 inhabitants, is a district town in the Freising district (Upper Bavaria, Bavaria), the seat of a bishop, and home to the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. The Christmas market has been a fixed Advent date in the region since the late 1970s. With 48 years of tradition, it is one of the oldest charitable Christmas markets in Bavaria. The market on the third Advent weekend complements the larger, commercial "Freisinger Christkindlmarkt" organized by the city marketing company.
The 48th edition of the Charitable Christmas Market in Freising takes place on the third Advent weekend: Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday, December 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The organizer is Aktive City Freising e.V.
Throughout the weekend, around 50 stalls are spread across Marienplatz and the adjacent alleys – supplemented by markets in the Old Prison and on Domberg.
