The festival celebrates regional hop culture with customs, conviviality, brewery beer, and Bavarian specialties. The program includes a traditional beer tapping in the Schlossbiergarten, a parade to the Hopfenhalle, performances by the Hallertau Hop Queen and her court, Goaßlschnoizn (whip cracking), an afternoon for seniors with the youth band of the Marktkapelle Au, and the Holledauer Radltag with tours through the Hallertau. On the festival Sunday, there is a Sunday opening for shopping. The Auer Hopfenfest is one of the central Volksfest (public festival) dates in the Hallertau.

Au in der Hallertau is a market town in the Freising district and is considered one of the central communities of the Hallertau (also Holledau), the world's largest contiguous hop-growing region. The Auer Hopfenfest is the most important festival in the town and celebrates the region's hop and beer culture – embedded in a vibrant tradition of customs and associations. The 64th edition took place in 2025.

Beer Tapping, Parade, and Hop Queen

The festive opening is marked by a traditional beer tapping in the Schlossbiergarten, followed by a parade to the Hopfenhalle, the central festival venue. The festival is represented by the Hallertau Hop Queen with her vice-queen and hop princess – these dignitaries are an integral part of the hop-related customs. Josef Siebler was the most recent festival host, who put together a music program with local groups and ensembles.
