Traditional Hopfenfest in the Hallertau capital Au
Au in der Hallertau is a market town in the Freising district and is considered one of the central communities of the Hallertau (also Holledau), the world's largest contiguous hop-growing region. The Auer Hopfenfest is the most important festival in the town and celebrates the region's hop and beer culture – embedded in a vibrant tradition of customs and associations. The 64th edition took place in 2025.
The festive opening is marked by a traditional beer tapping in the Schlossbiergarten, followed by a parade to the Hopfenhalle, the central festival venue. The festival is represented by the Hallertau Hop Queen with her vice-queen and hop princess – these dignitaries are an integral part of the hop-related customs. Josef Siebler was the most recent festival host, who put together a music program with local groups and ensembles.
The program is broad: On Saturday, there is an afternoon for seniors with the youth band of the Marktkapelle Au, along with performances by various music groups. A sporting component is the Holledauer Radltag with various cycling tours through the Hallertau. Elements of tradition, such as Goaßlschnoizn (whip cracking), as well as brewery beer and Bavarian specialties, complete the festival.
On the festival Sunday, Au hosts a Sunday opening for shopping (12:00 PM–6:00 PM), during which local shops open and the Hopfenfest is connected with local life. This integration of the Volksfest, customs, and the local community is characteristic of the Auer Hopfenfest.
As a hop festival in one of the core communities of the Hallertau, the Auer Hopfenfest is firmly anchored in the regional festival calendar. It attracts visitors from Au, the Freising district, and the entire Holledau region (Pfaffenhofen, Kelheim, Landshut) and serves as a showcase for the region's globally significant hop culture.
The 2026 edition continues the proven festival concept: beer tapping in the Schlossbiergarten, parade to the Hopfenhalle as the central festival venue, representation by the Hallertau Hop Queen with her vice-queen and hop princess. The festival host organizes a music program with local groups and ensembles.
The supporting program includes an afternoon for seniors with the youth band of the Marktkapelle Au, the Holledauer Radltag with various tours through the Hallertau, and traditional elements such as Goaßlschnoizn. On festival Sunday, September 27th, shops in Au will open during the Sunday opening for shopping (12:00 PM–6:00 PM).
