»Small Glasses, Big Beers« — over 100 regional and craft beers in the heart of the hop-growing region
The Hallertau (also Holledau) between Freising, Pfaffenhofen, and Kelheim is the largest contiguous hop-growing region in the world. About a third of global hop production comes from here. Hop fields with their characteristic trellises shape the landscape of the region. This hop identity makes a beer festival in Attenkirchen a natural fit.
The festival concept is focused on beer culture: over 100 different beers — regional Hallertau breweries, selected German craft beer breweries, international specialties — are offered for tasting in small glasses. Unlike a classic Volksfest (people's festival), the focus is not on maximum beer volume, but on taste diversity. The motto »Small Glasses, Big Beers« underscores this philosophy.
The major Hallertau breweries are represented — Erdinger Weissbräu (just outside), Aktienbrauerei Kaufbeuren, Schweiger, Plank, Schierlinger — as well as an increasing number of craft breweries from all over Bavaria and Southern Germany. Hop-centric varieties (Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Pilsner) are particularly in focus, as the hops come from the immediate region.
Several live stages provide musical accompaniment — from brass band music to Bavarian rock bands to independent pop. Food trucks and catering stands offer culinary delights. The festival's atmosphere is somewhere between a beer connoisseur event and a Volksfest — more relaxed than boisterous, but certainly convivial.
Attenkirchen is a market town in the Freising district, about 50 km north of Munich and 25 km northwest of Freising. Its location in the heart of the Hallertau makes it the natural site for a hop and beer festival. The event is organized by a local steering committee that has maintained the biennial rhythm since its premiere in 2012.
The eighth edition of the Hallertauer Bierfestival 2026 opens on Friday, June 12, and closes on Sunday, June 14, 2026. The venue is the center of Attenkirchen around Hauptstraße 5.
The festival concept focuses on beer culture and tasting rather than mass consumption. Over 100 different beers — from large Hallertau breweries to small craft beer manufacturers — are served in small glasses (typically 0.1 or 0.2 liters). This allows visitors to explore a wide spectrum of flavors over a weekend.
By car via the A 9 (Allershausen exit) or the B 301 from Freising (25 km). Parking available around Attenkirchen. By train to Freising, then bus (line 690) to Attenkirchen. Shuttle service from the festival during the festival days.
Admission ticket with tasting vouchers depending on the day. Individual beer tastings via a token system. Prices and more detailed information will be announced via the official website and social media.
