The long night of culture on the North Sea
Husum, lovingly called the "grey town by the sea" by Theodor Storm, is the secret cultural capital of North Frisia in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Once a year, over 25 cultural institutions open their doors simultaneously for the Culture Night, transforming the district of Nordfriesland into a stage that you can explore in a single summer evening. The format was first tested in 2004; since 2014, the non-profit organization KulturNacht Husum e.V. has organized the event with volunteer support and local sponsors.
The charm of the Culture Night lies in its well-thought-out concept: with a single ticket (10 Euros for adults), you gain access to all participating institutions. You walk through the old town, spontaneously decide on a reading at the Theodor Storm House, a lecture at the Nordfriesland Museum, or a concert in the courtyard of the Schloss vor Husum. Children and young people under 18 are invited free of charge.
More than 25 institutions regularly participate:
During the Culture Night, the old town has a relaxed, almost familiar atmosphere. There's a food truck on the market square with freshly prepared burgers, burritos, and cocktails. The Schloss Café offers barbecue with salads from 9:30 AM continuously until midnight. The distances between venues are short, everything is within walking distance.
The Culture Night is explicitly intended as a community event. The association works with volunteers and is supported by local businesses, the city of Husum, and the district of Nordfriesland. This collective sponsorship shapes the program: each participating institution designs its contribution independently, leading to great thematic diversity.
With its 21st edition on July 4, 2026, the Culture Night marks its establishment as a must-attend event in the North Frisian summer calendar. Over 25 institutions are confirmed — from the Theodor Storm House and Schloss vor Husum to the National Park House and the Filmclub. The program focuses on diversity: readings, concerts, exhibitions, films, lectures, and studio visits.
