Theodor Storm's Grey Town After Sunset
Husum, lovingly called the "grey town by the sea" by Theodor Storm, is the secret cultural capital of North Frisia in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Once a year, over 25 cultural institutions open their doors simultaneously for the Culture Night, transforming the district of Nordfriesland into a stage that you can explore in a single summer evening. The format was first tested in 2004; since 2014, the non-profit organization KulturNacht Husum e.V. has organized the event with volunteer support and local sponsors.
The Concept: One Ticket — All Doors Open
The charm of the Culture Night lies in its well-thought-out concept: with a single ticket (10 Euros for adults), you gain access to all participating institutions. You walk through the old town, spontaneously decide on a reading at the Theodor Storm House, a lecture at the Nordfriesland Museum, or a concert in the courtyard of the Schloss vor Husum. Children and young people under 18 are invited free of charge.
Participating Venues
More than 25 institutions regularly participate:
- Theodor Storm House — The poet's place of work, home of Husum literature
- Nordfriesland Museum Nissenhaus — Regional history and the Wadden Sea
- Schloss vor Husum with its chapel and banqueting halls
- Nordfriesland Maritime Museum
- National Park House Husum
- Filmclub Husum with special screenings
- Galleries and studios in the old town
- Churches with chamber concerts
- Theaters with short performances
What Else You Can Experience
During the Culture Night, the old town has a relaxed, almost familiar atmosphere. There's a food truck on the market square with freshly prepared burgers, burritos, and cocktails. The Schloss Café offers barbecue with salads from 9:30 AM continuously until midnight. The distances between venues are short, everything is within walking distance.
A Community Event
The Culture Night is explicitly intended as a community event. The association works with volunteers and is supported by local businesses, the city of Husum, and the district of Nordfriesland. This collective sponsorship shapes the program: each participating institution designs its contribution independently, leading to great thematic diversity.
