Three-day local marksmen's festival in the Wunstorf district of Kolenfeld in June
Kolenfeld is a historically grown district of the town of Wunstorf. Like many places in the northwestern Hanover region, the village maintains a vibrant marksmen's tradition, the most visible expression of which is the annual Schützenfest. The Kolenfeld Marksmen's Association organises the three-day festival in June, thus adding it to the tightly scheduled Wunstorf marksmen's calendar.
Friday evening marks the festive opening with the official opening ceremony, gathering, and the first dance evening. Saturday is dedicated to competitions and receptions, followed by a grand dance ball in the evening. Sunday features a festival service, a grand parade through Kolenfeld, the crowning of the new monarchs, and finally, the King's Ball. Throughout all three days, amusement rides, shooting galleries, and food stalls provide a classic folk festival atmosphere.
Marksmen's festivals in Lower Saxony have their roots in the medieval obligation of town defence. The marksmen's brotherhoods evolved into today's marksmen's associations, which preserve the customs and make them visible in annual festivals. In Kolenfeld, this tradition is evident in the typical dramatic sequence — king's shooting competition, reception, parade, proclamation — which makes the Schützenfest a multi-layered event.
Like all local Schützenfeste, the festival in Kolenfeld thrives on the voluntary commitment of numerous helpers. The active marksmen, friendly clubs, the fire brigade, and the families of the district all contribute to the festival together. For Kolenfeld, it is an occasion to present itself as a village community — and for guests from the Wunstorf town area or the Hanover region, it is an opportunity to experience village festival culture firsthand.
From June 19 to 21, 2026, the Kolenfeld Marksmen's Association will host its traditional Schützenfest. Three festival days featuring a parade, king's shooting competition, dance evenings, and folk festival elements will characterize the district.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the Kolenfeld Marksmen's Association in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
