Wendish-Sorbian costume diversity, craft market, and grand parade on the last weekend of August in the Spreewald
Burg in the Spreewald, Germany's largest scattered settlement with around 4,000 inhabitants, has been a core center of Wendish-Sorbian tradition in Lower Lusatia for centuries. The region between Cottbus and Lübben preserves its own language (Lower Sorbian), its own traditional costumes, and its own folk customs — celebrated every year on the last weekend of August at the festival grounds of the Amt Burg.
The 2026 Home and Costume Festival runs from Friday, August 28, to Sunday, August 30. At the festival grounds with its large main stage, costume groups from all over Lower Lusatia present themselves: girls and women in various festive costumes (festive, mourning, bridal, and semi-mourning attire), men in classic Sorbian festive garments. In addition, an international contingent of folklore groups from Poland, the Czech Republic, and other Central European regions will perform.
A crafts and showmen's market extends around the festival area. Regional potters, fabric painters, basket weavers, felt artists, and honey producers showcase their products here. The showmen's attractions include classic folk festival attractions such as carousels and shooting galleries — typical for a South/Central German home festival of this magnitude.
The highlight of the festival is traditionally the grand parade on Sunday. Over 1,000 costume wearers, floats, brass bands, and costume groups march through the village of Burg — a spectacle that garners attention in the supra-regional press every three years. The parade concludes at the festival grounds, where the closing celebration with a stage program takes place.
Burg is located in the Spree-Neiße district, one of Brandenburg's most sparsely populated and nature-rich districts. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald with its over 1,000 canals surrounds the village — punt rides, hikes, and bike tours are typical accompanying excursions to the costume festival. Visitors should plan a full day and include a trip to the Bismarck Tower, the Schlossberg, or a punt ride through the canals.
The 2026 edition runs from Friday, August 28, to Sunday, August 30. On the main stage, folklore and dance groups alternate with brass bands, rock and pop acts, and circus acrobatics. Costume groups from Lower Lusatia and neighboring regions of Poland and the Czech Republic present the full spectrum of Wendish-Sorbian festive attire.
The crafts and showmen's market is spread around the festival grounds and offers pottery, fabric painting, basket weaving, felt art, and honey products from the region — complemented by classic folk festival attractions.
