Sorbian-Wendish harvest custom in the Upper Spreewald
The Hahnrupfen – Sorbian "Kokot" – is one of the oldest and best-known Wendish-Sorbian harvest customs in Lower Lusatia. In Burg (Spreewald) – Sorbian Bórkowy – the custom is held annually by the Domowina Youth Burg. The Domowina is the association of Sorbs/Wends, which preserves the cultural identity of Germany's oldest indigenous minority.
In 2026, the Hahnrupfen will take place on the weekend of July 25th and 26th. The venue is Waldschlößchenstraße near the Nahkegraben ditch, on the eastern edge of Burg. The festival grounds will be transformed into a traditional riding arena with a flagged wooden structure and a festival stage.
The actual plucking is the centerpiece of the festival:
Symbolically, it's about bidding farewell to the harvest spirits of the old year and welcoming the new sowing period.
With around 4,000 inhabitants, Burg (Spreewald) – Sorbian Bórkowy – is one of the central places in the Sorbian Spreewald. Wendish-Sorbian tradition is particularly vibrant here: costumes, language, and harvest customs are preserved by the Schmiedemuseum Burg (Blacksmith Museum), the Spreewald-Therme (thermal spa) district, and the Spreewald harbor. Burg belongs to the district of Spree-Neiße and is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald.
The 133rd Hahnrupfen of the Domowina Youth Burg will take place on the weekend of July 25th and 26th, 2026, on Waldschlößchenstraße near the Nahkegraben ditch in Burg (Spreewald). The organizer is the Domowina Youth Burg, which has been carrying on the Wendish-Sorbian harvest custom for generations.
The focus is on the traditional rider competition: Young riders from Burg and the surrounding area gallop under a festively flagged gate, trying to grab the head and wings of a decorated rooster. The winners are declared Harvest Kings and crowned with the oak leaf wreath; they then choose their Harvest Queen. Supporting program: Sorbian traditional costumes, dance, polka, festival tent with traditional wedding soup.
Admission to the Hahnrupfen is free. Food and drinks are paid for directly at the festival tent and stalls.
Car: A15 (Berlin–Forst), exit Vetschau, then B115/L51 to Burg. Parking available at the Spreewald harbor or the festival grounds.
Train: RB46 to Burg (Spreewald), about a 15-minute walk from the station to the festival grounds.
Admission to the Hahnrupfen is free, or a modest contribution for the festival tent. Food and drinks are paid for directly at the stalls.
Those who arrive in traditional costume or Wendish-Sorbian clothing are especially welcome – preserving tradition is part of the festival.
