Whitsun spectacle at Schlossberg Burg: Open-air theatre by the Sorbian National Ensemble with fireworks
The Schlossberg in Burg (Spreewald) rises about 60 metres above the Spreewald — a viewpoint with a Bismarck Tower dating back to 1916, offering one of the most impressive vistas in the region. For three Whitsun evenings in 2026, this hill becomes a natural stage for the Spreewälder Sagennacht. Professional lighting and sound systems, along with tiered seating, create a modern theatre production unparalleled in its natural setting in Brandenburg.
Founded in 1952 in Bautzen, the Sorbian National Ensemble (SNE) is the largest institution for Sorbian-Wendish high culture. It comprises a professional orchestra, ballet company, and choir. For the 2026 Spreewälder Sagennacht, it is producing the play "Müschen impossible, or Wanka, Janek and the Three Impossibilities" — a legend that, in its updated form, alludes to the local population's resistance against a planned mega-factory in the region. Legend and reality, past and present merge.
The main characters, Wanka and Janek, face three impossibilities, which in the legend also symbolise the preservation of the Spreewald. The production combines ballet and choir with solo voices, sung passages, and spoken dialogue. At the climax of each evening, fireworks in front of the Bismarck Tower, reflected in the Spreewald's waterways, conclude the performance.
The Spreewälder Sagennacht has been a fixed date in the Spreewald's Whitsun festival calendar for decades. With a new play each year but a recurring format — open-air, Sorbian National Ensemble, fireworks — it has cultivated a loyal audience from the Spreewald, Berlin, and surrounding federal states. In 2026, the thematic link between legend and current environmental debate marks one of the more political production dates in the festival's history.
The Whitsun weekend is traditionally peak tourist season in the Spreewald — with punt boat trips, hikes, and cycling tours. Burg (Spreewald) is Germany's largest dispersed settlement and is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald. Visitors to the Sagennacht can combine their trip with punt boat tours, visits to the Lehde Open-Air Museum, or hikes in the Spreewald.
The 2026 edition features the play "Müschen impossible" on three consecutive evenings — during the Whitsun weekend, with admission starting at 5:00 PM and the performance beginning at 7:30 PM. Each of the three performances concludes with fireworks in front of the Bismarck Tower.
The Sorbian National Ensemble brings a full cast to the stage with ballet, choir, and soloists. The play merges legend with political relevance — the planned mega-factory in the Spreewald is a hot topic of regional debate in 2026.
