Sorbian-Wendish Costume and Folklore Festival in the Spreewald
The motto captures it vividly: at “Die Tracht tanzt,” the Wendish-Sorbian costumes are the focus – with their voluminous skirts, embroidered aprons, headdresses, and colorful ribbons. For a whole day, they will not just be exhibited, but worn and, above all, danced in.
A special feature of the festival is its organization: Burg, Lübben, and Lübbenau – the three major Spreewald tourist towns – organize the festival together. A cooperation that is rather the exception in Brandenburg tourism, which is often characterized by a narrow focus. In 2026, the festival will take place in Burg, at the Waldhotel Eiche.
Throughout the weekend, dance and costume groups from the entire Sorbian-Wendish settlement area will showcase their skills. Folk music bands from the Spreewald will play, traditional round dances will be performed – and the audience will be invited to join in the dancing. Family activities will run concurrently on the festival grounds: costume workshops for children, Sorbian storytelling sessions, costume demonstrations.
In the Spreewald, a lagoon landscape in southern Brandenburg, live the Lower Sorbs – a Slavic minority who have preserved their language and culture for centuries in the Spree-Neiße and Dahme-Spreewald districts. The Wendish costume is one of the most visible signs of this identity. “Die Tracht tanzt” celebrates it and makes it tangible for visitors.
Burg (Spreewald) in the Spree-Neiße district is one of the main towns in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald. Those who visit the festival often combine it with a punt boat trip through the Spreewald canals, a visit to the Lehde Open-Air Museum, or a hike through the floodplain landscape. The state of Brandenburg shows itself here from its Sorbian side – one that is often neglected in major travel guides.
In 2026, “Die Tracht tanzt” will once again celebrate Sorbian-Wendish costume culture in the Spreewald. The venue is the Waldhotel Eiche in Burg. Over two days, dance groups from the entire Sorbian-Wendish settlement area will perform their dances; the audience is invited to join in.
The festival is a rare cooperation of the three major Spreewald tourism associations: Burg, Lübben, and Lübbenau.
