Traditional Upper Palatinate Kirchweih on the Luxemburger-Wiese
In the Upper Palatinate, the Kirwa (Kirchweih) is far more than a folk festival: it is a social event that connects generations, brings young couples together, and cements the village's identity anew each year. In Ebermannsdorf, a community of around 3,000 inhabitants south of Amberg, the Kirwa is a multi-day grand event – organized by the Kirwa Community Ebermannsdorf, supported by the Kirwabuam (young men in traditional costume), the Kirwamadln (young women), and countless helpers from the village.
The venue is the Luxemburger-Wiese at Bergstraße 30, located on the outskirts of Ebermannsdorf. This is where the magnificent Kirwabaum (Kirwa tree) is erected, where the festival tent stands, where people dance, celebrate, and eat. The meadow can accommodate several hundred guests and is surrounded by parking areas and access paths. Local reports from the Brauchwiki (customs wiki) describe how the festival was sometimes "positively overrun" – a testament to the event's enduring appeal.
The sequence of an Upper Palatinate Kirwa follows a fixed ritual: the erection of the Kirwabaum – a tree often 25 meters high, adorned with ribbons and wreaths – opens the festival. The highlight is the Austanzen der Kirwa (Kirwa dancing): the Kirwabuam with their Kirwamadln dance in traditional costume (for men, Lederhose, white shirt, hat with a feather tuft; for women, Dirndl) to brass band music. The central "Strauß" – a bouquet decorated with flowers – is passed around to music; whoever holds it when the music stops becomes the Oberkirwabua or -madl and officially leads the Kirwa. This is accompanied by Schlachtschüssel (a pork dish), Franconian bratwurst, fried carp, and the obligatory festival tent beer.
The Ebermannsdorfer Kirwa spans several days: from the opening weekend with tree erection and festival tent opening to the Kirwa Day itself, when the boys and girls in full traditional costume compete in the grand dance. Family days, senior afternoons, and children's programs are integral parts. Brass bands and party bands from the Upper Palatinate play in the festival tent, and local clubs provide catering.
From June 19 to 22, 2026, the Luxemburger-Wiese in Ebermannsdorf will transform into the festival grounds for this year's Kirwa. The magnificent Kirwa tree will be erected to kick things off; in the festival tent, brass bands and party bands from the Upper Palatinate will ensure full rows. The highlight is the Kirwa dancing: the Kirwabuam in traditional costume and their Kirwamadln dance under the eyes of the entire village. On Kirwa Day itself, the region comes together to taste Franconian and Upper Palatinate specialties and experience the communal festival.
Detailed times and band lineups will be announced shortly before the Kirwa on kirwa-ebermannsdorf.de and via official notices in Ebermannsdorf.
