Walpurgis Night in Dudweiler
As April draws to a close, it's May fire time in the Dudweiler district of Saarbrücken. The Geisekippcher Buwe unn Määde e.V., a traditional customs association founded in 1973, invites you to the Hexennacht (Witches' Night) at their club grounds at Solferinostraße 18a. Here, the old tradition of driving out winter with a crackling fire and welcoming summer is kept alive.
From Campfire to May Dance Society
The neighborhood gathers on the grounds starting at 5 PM. As the sun sets behind the hills of the Saarbrücken regional association, the wood is piled high. The actual Maifeuer (May fire) is lit at dusk and burns late into the night – the centerpiece of a convivial gathering of club members, Dudweiler citizens, and guests.
Saarland's Schwenker and May Punch
As is customary with the Geisekippcher, the Schwenkgrill (swivel grill) is used: marinated pork neck, Lyoner sausage, bratwurst – Saarland's grilling culture in its purest form. Served with draft beer, May punch, and non-alcoholic drinks. The club handles the catering themselves, with proceeds going towards club activities and the preservation of the May tradition.
A Club with Over 50 Years of History
The Geisekippcher Buwe unn Määde see themselves as custodians of Dudweiler traditions. In addition to the Hexennacht, they organize a May festival at the end of May, participate in carnival parades, and are involved in the cultural life of the district. The name derives from the historical place name Geisekippche – a piece of Dudweiler linguistic history.
A Typical Saarland Evening
Anyone who visits the Geisekippcher's Hexennacht experiences the Saarland at its most relaxed: no grand staging, but genuine club culture, dialect, barbecue smoke, and campfire romance. An ideal opportunity to chat with locals.
