Club summer festival of the German Red Cross in the Saarbrücken district of Dudweiler
The DRK Dudweiler local chapter dates back to before 1881 – making it one of the oldest Red Cross associations in Saarland. Today, the association has 542 supporting members, 43 active helpers, 10 full-time employees, and 25 members in the Youth Red Cross (JRK). The headquarters at Fischbachstraße 1 in Dudweiler is a contact point for first aid courses, medical services, blood donation appointments, and the association's social work.
The summer festival of the DRK local chapter is a typical Saarland club event: down-to-earth, family-friendly, and aimed at thanking the people of Dudweiler for their support of the Red Cross. Saarland specialties are served on the premises of the headquarters – Lyoner, Bratwurst, salads, cakes – and cool drinks, all at fair prices, with proceeds benefiting the club's work.
Highlights include demonstrations by the active DRK team: paramedics show first aid measures, resuscitation demonstrations on a training mannequin, treatment of cuts and burns, and work with the ambulance. The Youth Red Cross presents its activities and recruits new members – children can also learn the basics of first aid at hands-on stations.
Dudweiler, with around 25,000 inhabitants, is the largest and northernmost district of the state capital Saarbrücken. Formerly an independent town, Dudweiler was incorporated into Saarbrücken in 1974. Today, Dudweiler, with the world-famous "Brennender Berg" (a natural coal fire since 1668), is a Saarland attraction. Visitors to the summer festival can combine their day with a hike to the Brennender Berg.
