About Köferinger Kirwa

The Köferinger Kirwa is one of the most traditional Kirchweihen (church consecration festivals) in the Upper Palatinate and a major draw in the Schwandorf district. Organized by the Heimat- & Kulturverein Köfering (HKV) and the Kirwaleit Köfering, the four-day festival traditionally takes place on the last weekend of August on the sports grounds of SV Köfering. Highlights include the erection of the Kirwabaum (festival tree), the traditional 'Baumaustanzen' (tree dancing) by the Kirwa couples, the Kirwabär (straw-covered figure) parading through the village, as well as lively brass music, live bands, and marquee festivities. A vibrant piece of Upper Palatinate folk culture that attracts masses of visitors year after year.

Getting There

Sportgelände SV Köfering, 93096 Köfering (Kümmersbruck), Amberg-Sulzbach district. By car via the A6 (Amberg) or state roads towards Kümmersbruck/Köfering. By train: Amberg station, then bus or taxi.

Upper Palatinate Kirwa Tradition

The Kirwa – the Franconian-Upper Palatinate Kirchweih – is one of Bavaria's most vibrant folk festivals. In Köfering, a district of Kümmersbruck in the Amberg-Sulzbach district, the Kirwa is upheld by the "Kirwaleit" (the unmarried young men and women of the village) and the Heimat- & Kulturverein. The Köferinger Kirwa is among the largest and best-known in the region.

Kirwabaum and Baumaustanzen

At the center is the Kirwabaum – a tall, decorated tree erected on Saturday. The highlight is the 'Ausstanzen des Kirwabaums' on Sunday afternoon: Kirwa couples dance around the tree while a bouquet of flowers is passed around – the couple holding the bouquet when the music stops becomes the head Kirwa couple. A custom cherished for generations.

The Kirwabär Roams

On Kirwamontag (Kirwa Monday), the Kirwabär – a figure covered in straw – parades through Köfering. The "Kirwabärtreiben" is one of the oldest and most boisterous customs of the Upper Palatinate Kirchweih and provides much amusement in the village.

Four Days of Festivities

From Saturday to Tuesday, the Kirwa offers marquee festivities with live bands and brass music, a festive church service with a brass band on Sunday, morning pint ('Frühschoppen'), lunch in the marquee, and a political evening to conclude.
