Over 40 cheese dairies and more than 200 types of cheese in the historic open-air museum near Schwäbisch Hall
At the Hohenlohe Open-Air Museum Wackershofen, one of Southern Germany's most important open-air museums, farmhouses, barns, and courtyards transform into an accessible gourmet landscape over a May weekend. The Cheese and Delicacies Market is known far beyond the Schwäbisch Hall region – and is one of the few markets in Baden-Württemberg so consistently specialized in artisanal cheese.
Over 40 cheese dairies from all over Germany and the adjacent Alpine countries present around 200 types of cheese. You can sample your way through the assortment: from mild, creamy fresh goat cheese and more mature sheep cheese specialties to aged mountain cheeses made from cow's milk. Many producers come from Hohenlohe, the Swabian Forest, and Upper Swabia – complemented by dairies from the Allgäu, the pre-Alpine region, and Swiss traditions.
Since the 1970s, the museum has been collecting historic buildings from the Hohenlohe region – farmhouses, mills, barns, bakehouses, a shepherd's wagon. In total, over 70 historic buildings from several centuries have been relocated and meticulously reconstructed. During the gourmet market, this backdrop acts like a huge, living theater: you wander from one half-timbered building to another, some houses are open for visits, and regional cuisine is served in the "Roter Ochsen" inn.
Wackershofen is a district of Schwäbisch Hall in the Schwäbisch Hall district, Baden-Württemberg. The Hohenlohe plain around Schwäbisch Hall is known for an exceptionally dense culinary scene: the Schwäbisch-Hällisches Landschwein, Boeuf de Hohenlohe, traditional fruit orchards, and growing organic farming characterize the region. The gourmet market is one of its showcases.
With the Cheese and Delicacies Market on May 9 and 10, 2026, the Hohenlohe Open-Air Museum Wackershofen kicks off its main market season for 2026. For two days, you can wander among half-timbered courtyards, historic barns, and a dense network of stands featuring cheese, wine, brandy, and craft producers.
The focus is on cheese dairies from Hohenlohe, the Allgäu, the pre-Alpine region, and some farms from France, Austria, and Switzerland – offering a total of around 200 types of cheese made from three types of milk. The selection is complemented by fruit brandies from traditional orchards, mustard and chutney manufacturers, butchers featuring Schwäbisch-Hällisches Landschwein, organic vegetable farms, and honey producers. The "Roter Ochsen" inn in the museum will provide warm regional cuisine.
The museum will publish the detailed schedule and the list of cheese dairies before the market days on wackershofen.de/veranstaltungen.
Admission to the market is included in the regular museum admission fee. Current prices and discounts (including for children, family tickets, annual passes) can be viewed on the museum's website.
