When Opera Comes to the Village
The project "Dorf macht Oper" (Village Stages Opera) is one of Germany's most unusual cultural phenomena. In the village of Klein Leppin, with its 80 inhabitants, located in the Prignitz region, one of Brandenburg's most sparsely populated areas, the association FestLand e.V. has been staging a major opera production annually since 2006 — featuring professional singers, orchestras, and directors, performed in and around the village barns, supported by volunteers from the village and the region. In 2026, FestLand e.V. celebrates its 20th anniversary — and has chosen Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 'Idomeneo' for this special occasion.
Four Performances from July 2nd to 5th, 2026
The performance series includes four public shows: Thursday, July 2nd, 6 PM — public dress rehearsal; Friday, July 3rd, 7 PM — premiere; Saturday, July 4th, 7 PM — second performance; Sunday, July 5th — musical brunch starting at 10 AM and final performance at 2 PM. Each performance attracts around 800 spectators — remarkable for a village of 80 residents.
Idomeneo — Mozart in the Barn
Mozart's 'Idomeneo, Re di Creta' (1781) is one of the Mannheim composer's most spectacular operas — a drama about the Cretan king Idomeneo, who, after a storm, must sacrifice the first creature he meets on land, which turns out to be his own son. FestLand e.V. transposes the ancient drama into the barn setting of the Prignitz: minimalist stage designs, amplified sound in the open space, costumes blending baroque inspiration with contemporary reduction. A professional ensemble handles the musical direction, and the main roles are cast with professionals.
FestLand e.V. — 20 Years of Village Opera
Behind the project is the non-profit association FestLand e.V., which has proven for two decades that high culture doesn't have to be centralized. What began in 2006 as a crazy idea — opera in the village, supported by farmers, teachers, and retirees as volunteers — has become one of Brandenburg's most renowned festival weeks. Renowned directors, conductors, and singers regularly collaborate with the association. Past repertoire includes Mozart's 'The Magic Flute', Verdi's 'Falstaff', and Weber's 'Der Freischütz'.
Klein Leppin and the Prignitz
Klein Leppin is located in the west of the Prignitz district in the state of Brandenburg, about a two-hour drive from Berlin. The area between Wittenberge, Karstädt, and Lenzen is rural: farmsteads, old brick churches, vast fields. This contrast — Mozart's opera in this landscape — is the project's true highlight. Visitors to Klein Leppin come not only for the music but for the entire experience of landscape, village community, and high culture.
