Brandenburg's Showcase of Cattle Breeding
The Prignitz Animal Show in Blüthen is considered the most important agricultural exhibition in the north of the state of Brandenburg. It is organized by the Tierschauverein Prignitz e.V. (Prignitz Animal Show Association) in cooperation with Rinderzucht Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Brandenburg GmbH (RBB), the leading breeding association in the region. For decades, the venue has been the riding grounds in Blüthen, a district of Karstädt, located about 200 kilometers northwest of Berlin and close to the Mecklenburg state border. While the event moves between various show grounds in the region, Blüthen remains one of the most traditional locations.
Competitions and Demonstrations
The core of the animal show consists of the cattle show competitions: young cows, heifers, and bulls from Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are presented to judges who award class winners and champions. Additionally, shepherds showcase their sheep breeds, beekeepers their hives, and local producers their horses and small livestock. Agricultural machinery exhibitors present their equipment, and direct marketers offer regional products.
Family Festival and Farmers' Market
A small folk festival has grown around the show: a farmers' market featuring honey, cheese, sausage, and bread from the Prignitz region, riding demonstrations, a bouncy castle, and children's activities. Food stalls offer bratwurst, coffee, and cake – the typical atmosphere of a North German agricultural festival. Admission is family-friendly, and many visitors come from the surrounding villages of the Prignitz district, from Perleberg, Wittenberge, and rural Mecklenburg.
Karstädt and the Blüthen Riding Grounds
Karstädt is a large municipality in the Prignitz district with around 5,600 inhabitants and several districts. Blüthen is located about eight kilometers west of the main town on the L 14 road. The riding grounds are usually used by the local riding and driving club – for the animal show weekend, it transforms into the center of the North German breeding scene.
A Tradition of the Prignitz
The RBB's animal shows are mandatory events for every cattle breeder between the Elbe and Oder rivers. In a region where dairy farming and suckler cow husbandry shape the landscape, the Prignitz Animal Show is also a piece of identity – and a place where city and country meet in Brandenburg.
