Three-day town festival for the double jubilee of the poet Johann Heinrich Voß
The Bürgerfest Penzlin is the annual town festival of the small Reuter town in the Mecklenburg Lake District. In 2026, it carries a special epithet: "Voß 2026". The occasion is a double jubilee of the poet and translator Johann Heinrich Voß, who is closely associated with the region — 2026 marks the 275th anniversary of his birth and the 200th anniversary of his death.
Johann Heinrich Voß was born in 1751 in Sommerstorf near Penzlin and died in 1826 in Heidelberg. He became famous primarily for his groundbreaking translations of Homer's works — the Iliad and the Odyssey — into German. His translations had a lasting impact on the German literary language. In Penzlin, the Johann-Heinrich-Voß-Literaturhaus commemorates the poet, and the Voß Prize for Greek-German Translation is awarded annually.
Unlike a purely folk festival (Volksfest), the Bürgerfest Penzlin is characterized by the participation of the town's community. Clubs, schools, and citizens contribute to the program. The involvement of the schools named after Voß from Penzlin and the Lower Saxon partner town Otterndorf connects the festival with the educational ideal — Voß himself was a teacher and headmaster.
With the "Voß 2026" Bürgerfest, Penzlin makes its literary heritage accessible to a broad audience. The Reuter town — named after the Low German poet Fritz Reuter, who also hails from the region — cultivates a remarkable literary tradition. The double jubilee of Johann Heinrich Voß provides a festive, culturally charged framework for the 2026 town festival.
From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, Penzlin celebrates its Bürgerfest under the motto "Voß 2026". The occasion is the double jubilee of the poet and translator Johann Heinrich Voß — 275th birthday and 200th anniversary of death. The marketplace of the Reuter town becomes the festival stage for three days of town festival.
Festivities, live music, and a cultural program related to Voß and his work characterize the weekend. On July 4th, the Voß Schools from Penzlin and its partner town Otterndorf, among others, will perform on the marketplace, accompanied by live music. The Bürgerfest thus combines a festive atmosphere with the commemoration of the great translator of Homer.
The complete program will be published via the event calendar of the Penzliner Land Office.
