About Photography Biennale

The Penzlin Photography Biennale is a young photo competition with a subsequent exhibition in the small Mecklenburg town of Penzlin. Every two years, the town invites photographers to celebrate the poetic, the simple, and the vastness of the Mecklenburg landscape through photography. The second edition in 2026 is themed »Odyssey in Mecklenburg — wondrous creatures, fabulous estates, and natural phenomena«. The competition is open to professionals and amateurs aged ten and over, regardless of their place of residence. The biennale opens on May 19, 2026.

Mecklenburg Through the Lens

Penzlin, the small Reuter town in the Mecklenburg Lake District, is surrounded by a landscape known for its quiet vastness and unique charm. This very landscape is the focus of the Penzlin Photography Biennale — a photo competition that invites photographers every two years to rediscover Mecklenburg with their cameras.

Odyssey in Mecklenburg

The second Penzlin Photography Biennale 2026 is titled »Odyssey in Mecklenburg — wondrous creatures, fabulous estates, and natural phenomena«. The theme invites participants to seek out the poetic, the simple, and the mysterious aspects of the region: enchanted manor houses, unusual animals, special light conditions, and natural phenomena between lakes, forests, and fields. The biennale aims to be an artistic exploration of what defines the Mecklenburg landscape.

Open to All

  • Participation for all natural persons aged ten and over — regardless of place of residence
  • Professionals and amateurs are equally welcome
  • Exhibition of submitted works after the opening
  • Opening event as a festive start to the biennale

A Biennale for a Small Town

It is remarkable that a small town like Penzlin is organizing its own photo competition with supra-regional appeal. The Photography Biennale is part of the town's diverse cultural life, which already boasts significant cultural venues such as its Old Castle and the Johann Heinrich Voss Literature House. The biennial rhythm gives the format time to develop and explore a new thematic focus each time.
