Medieval castle festival with knight's camp at the Old Castle Penzlin
The Old Castle Penzlin in the Mecklenburg Reuter town in the Mecklenburg Lake District is one of Northern Germany's most impressive historical sites. It is famous for its Museum of Everyday Magic and its Witches' Cellar, which documents the history of witch hunts. Once a year, on an August weekend, this castle transforms into a medieval stage: the Penzlin Castle Festival.
In front of the castle, knights set up their tents – between a giant wooden water wheel, Viking boats, and a newly erected wooden siege engine. On Saturday and Sunday, knights, nobles, craftspeople, jugglers, artists, and actors gather in the historic castle grounds. The camp life brings the everyday life of past centuries to life.
The Castle Festival begins on Friday evening with a band night featuring music and a fire show. On Saturday and Sunday, the knight's camp, the show fights, and a diverse family programme are the focus. International food provides for physical well-being. The festival consciously appeals to families – from the youngest castle visitors to medieval enthusiasts.
The Penzlin Castle Festival looks back on a long history and has been a firm fixture in the town's event calendar for decades. With each edition, it attracts thousands of visitors from the Mecklenburg Lake District and beyond. The combination of authentic medieval flair and the special aura of the Old Castle with its Witches' Cellar makes the festival unmistakable.
From August 21 to 23, 2026, the Old Castle Penzlin will transform into a medieval stage for the 32nd time. In front of the castle, knights will set up their camp – between a giant wooden water wheel, Viking boats, and a newly built wooden siege engine.
