Three days of 'free and outdoors' in Ahlen's city centre with two stages, music, and culinary delights
The Ahlener Stadtfest is more than a summer event in the Warendorf district – it's the most important stage in the city's cultural calendar. The 38th edition takes place from Friday, July 10th to Sunday, July 12th, 2026, following the tried-and-tested concept: free admission, everything outdoors, everything in the city centre.
The festival grounds extend across three central squares in Ahlen's city centre: the historic Market Square with its fountain ensemble, Marienplatz as a second focal point, and the area around St. Bartholomew's Church (the city's landmark). Two stages will be used simultaneously – one for live music, the other for performances by local clubs, dance schools, and smaller music ensembles.
Since the late 1980s, the Ahlener Stadtfest has been part of the tradition of Westphalian civic festivals, where admission remains free and the event unfolds openly in the urban space. Visitors move between the squares, listen to half an hour of music, eat a bratwurst, meet neighbours, and move on. The pace of the festival is leisurely – it's not a festival with headliner pressure, but a city weekend that integrates the entire city life.
The two stages feature cover bands, regional artists, school and club ensembles, and various music groups from Westphalia and the nearby Münsterland region. The culinary offerings are typically Westphalian: bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), fries, pizza, crêpes, ice cream, and of course, beer (including Westphalian Pilsener). In addition, clubs present themselves with information stands, and artists and craftspeople offer their goods at small stalls.
With around 53,000 inhabitants, Ahlen is the largest town in the Warendorf district and is geographically located in the centre of Westphalia. St. Bartholomew's Church dates back to the 13th century. Industrial tradition (mining, mechanical engineering) shapes the city to this day. The Stadtfest is one of the events that showcases the city's self-image: down-to-earth, hospitable, and without airs.
For those coming with children: the Stadtfest is family-friendly, with shorter distances between stages and plenty of food options. A bouncy castle or face painting are often part of the standard programme. Ahlen's city centre is within walking distance of the train station – travelling by train is recommended.
