Medieval Market in Dortmund's North
The Mittelalterliches Treyben zu Mengede is one of the most beautiful medieval festivals in the northern Ruhr area. From June 19th to 21st, 2026, the Volksgarten Mengede in the Dortmund-Mengede district will transform into a medieval camp with a market, stage, and tournament grounds. The event is part of the market calendar of the agency Vehi-Mercatus, which organizes medieval markets throughout Germany.
Program Highlights — Experiencing the Middle Ages
The three days offer a packed program of authentically staged medieval experiences:
- Knight Tournaments on the tournament grounds — sword fighting, jousting, archery competitions
- Acrobatics and Juggling — smaller stages spread throughout the camp
- Fire Shows in the evening — fire eaters, fire jugglers, fire swords
- Medieval Music — minstrels with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, shawm, and drums
- Craft Market with blacksmiths, potters, weavers, leather workers
- Medieval Food — roasted skewers, mead, herb beers, soups by the fire
Volksgarten Mengede — A Stage in the Green
The Volksgarten Mengede is one of the green oases in Dortmund's north. With its old trees, meadows, and the nearby Mengede Castle, it provides an ideal backdrop for a medieval festival. The district of Mengede, as a formerly independent municipality (until 1928), has a strong local identity that the event further embraces.
Free Admission — Financed by Exhibitors
Like many medieval festivals, the Treyben is financed by the stall fees of the market participants and the visitors' consumption. Admission is therefore completely free — an important factor for families.
Medieval Scene in NRW
With the Dortmund Hansemarkt in autumn, the Mittelaltermarkt zu Hörde in spring (see Hörder Frühling), and the Treyben, Dortmund (a district-free city in North Rhine-Westphalia) has a well-developed medieval scene. It caters to an audience that wants to see the typical city festival atmosphere complemented by a historical setting.
