Traditional arts and crafts market in the museum courtyard
While the large Westphalian Christmas markets (Münster, Dortmund, Soest) attract crowds, the Christmas Market at the Ahlener Heimatmuseum has established itself as an anti-mainstream event since 2015: small, personal, focused on arts and crafts. The twelfth edition from November 30 to December 1, 2026, continues the proven concept.
The Ahlener Heimatmuseum on Wilhelmstraße — a restored half-timbered house with an inner courtyard — is the ideal setting for a compact Advent market. Around 20 stalls offer:
On a small stage in the courtyard, choirs, brass ensembles, and music clubs from Ahlen and the surrounding area perform — the exact schedule will be published in mid-November. For children, there will be storytelling sessions and a visit from St. Nicholas on Saturday afternoon.
During both market days, there is a free special opening within the Heimatmuseum — the permanent exhibition on Ahlen's city history can be visited, and the family areas with recreated old workshops are particularly popular with children.
Ahlen, with just under 50,000 inhabitants, is located in the Warendorf district between Münster and Hamm. The city owes its upswing to hard coal (Zeche Westfalen, in operation until 2000) and is now home to several medium-sized companies. The Christmas market at the Heimatmuseum provides a conscious counterpoint to city life in November: artisanal, regional, without mass tourism.
The 2026 market runs on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Heimatmuseum is open free of charge during market hours — a tour through Ahlen's city history is part of the program for many visitors. The detailed stage schedule with choirs, brass ensembles, and associations will be published in mid-November 2026.
Current program: ahlen.de.
Free admission. Mulled wine approx. €3.50, potato pancakes €3, crêpes €4.
By train: Take the RB69 or RE6 to Ahlen station, then a 8-minute walk via Bahnhofstraße to Wilhelmstraße. By car: Take the A2 motorway, exit at Ahlen, and use the "Kaiserring" parking garage, a 5-minute walk away.
Sunday morning is the time for relaxed browsing — it gets crowded in the afternoon, especially around the mulled wine stand. Cash is preferred — many small stalls do not accept cards.
