Annual herb and culture market in the Black Forest village of Oberried around the historic Klosterschiire
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the small Black Forest village of Oberried in the Dreisamtal valley will become the region's herb capital. Kräuterdorf Oberried e.V. invites you from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. around the historic Klosterschiire for the Herb Day — an annual festival that combines the tradition of herbal medicine with contemporary culture, workshop offerings, and sensory experiences. You will experience a "festival for all senses" here — Black Forest herbs with their scents, tastes, colors, and stories.
Local vendors set up their stalls around the Klosterschiire — a historic granary building on Klosterplatz:
The vendors are carefully selected — the Kräuterdorf association emphasizes regional origin and artisanal authenticity. You will find no industrially produced goods here, but products from the Black Forest and its immediate neighboring communities.
Throughout the day, several guided tours and workshops will take place:
The musical program features orchestral concerts with typical Black Forest folk music, ballet performances by local dance schools, and a final concert in the evening in the herb garden. The atmosphere is relaxed — guests sit on wooden benches among the plants, listen to live music, and smell the herbal scents of the market.
The association Kräuterdorf Oberried e.V. was founded to revive Oberried's herb tradition and pass it on to the next generation in a contemporary form. The village officially calls itself a "Kräuterdorf" (Herb Village) — a marketing concept maintained in several Black Forest communities (Kräuterdörfer Lalendorf, Pfaffenweiler, Mengen, among others). Oberried offers herb hikes, a permanent herb trail through the village, a herb garden, and the annual Herb Day.
Oberried is located in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, in the Dreisamtal — a narrow Black Forest valley east of Freiburg, through which the Dreisam river flows, leading via the Höllental Pass to Titisee. With around 2,800 inhabitants, Oberried is a small village, but it has become known for its location at the entrance to the Black Forest and its herb culture. The Schauinsland — the highest mountain in the Hochschwarzwald near Freiburg — is not far away; in summer, Oberried is a starting point for hikes, mountain bike tours, and visits to the nearby Schluchsee lake.
The 2026 edition of Oberried Herb Day follows the established concept: one day, six hours, a diverse program of farmers' market, workshops, guided tours, and concerts around the historic Klosterschiire. For years, the Kräuterdorf association has developed a well-coordinated format that combines knowledge transfer with sensory experience and regional economy.
Families with children are just as welcome as herb enthusiasts and gardening enthusiasts.
Free admission. Workshops and individual guided tours may have a small fee. Food and drinks at the market at usual prices.
By car: B31 from Freiburg into the Dreisamtal valley, exit Oberried. By train: Kirchzarten station (Höllentalbahn), then bus 7216 to Oberried.
Free admission to the entire market area. Workshops and guided tours may incur a small fee.
Sunday, June 14, 2026, 11:00 AM–5:00 PM.
Those seeking knowledge about herbs should register for one of the herb garden tours — the guide will explain the plants on-site, in the garden, and in their ecological context. The bouquet garnis workshop is particularly suitable for families with children. Before and after the market: take a walk along the Dreisam river or ascend the Schauinsland.
