Agricultural culture and farmers' market in the Black Forest
The Dreisamtal lies east of Freiburg im Breisgau and leads from the Black Forest's capital up towards Titisee. The region is characterized by small and medium-sized farms — dairy farming, Black Forest farm cows, wildflower meadows, alpine pastures with cheese production. This traditional Black Forest farm culture is the theme and occasion for the Höfefestival.
The festival takes place at the Rainhofscheune in the Himmelreich district of Kirchzarten — a historic, restored barn at the Erlenhof. The Erlenhof is a classic Dreisamtal farm that now hosts cultural events. The festival area includes the barn (for lectures, concerts, and indoor activities), the courtyard (market stalls), and the surrounding meadows (animals, picnics, games).
The 5th edition in 2026 runs for three days from Friday, September 25th to Sunday, September 27th. Program highlights include: Farmers' Market with producers from the Dreisamtal and Hochschwarzwald (cheese, sausages, honey, apple juice, fruit, vegetables, herbs); Animal Stations featuring Black Forest Hinterwälder cattle (an endangered breed), chickens, sheep, and bees; Concerts with Black Forest folk and Swabian-Alemannic traditional music; Lectures on topics such as wildflower meadows, agricultural policy, and Black Forest cheese production.
Especially for children, there are Experience Stations: meeting animals (safe petting area), baking bread, cooking bread on a stick over a fire, farm rally with quiz stations about the different farms and their animals. The format is aimed at families from the entire greater Freiburg area.
The association Marktplatz LandKultur has been the driving force for years. It brings together direct marketers, farms, dairies, beekeepers, and cultural creators from the Dreisamtal and Hochschwarzwald region for joint events and assists with marketing and educational work. The Höfefestival is its most important annual event.
