Over 100 artisans in the UNESCO World Heritage monastery courtyard — three days of demonstrations, sales, and inspiration
Maulbronn Monastery is one of Europe's most breathtaking monastic complexes — one of the few completely preserved medieval Cistercian sites north of the Alps. Founded in 1147 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, the complex forms a self-contained district within the Enzkreis: monastery church, refectory, well house, monks' dormitory, outbuildings — all in a state of preservation that is exceptional worldwide. The large monastery courtyard is open to the public and is used for special events two to three times a year. Lebendiges Kunsthandwerk is among the most prominent of these.
The 2026 edition runs from Saturday, April 4th to Monday, April 6th, 2026 (Easter Monday). Venues: the large monastery courtyard with open-air market stalls and the Stadthalle Maulbronn for indoor exhibitors and weather-protected sales booths.
Over 100 professional artisans from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and occasionally from other European countries will present their works. The range is impressive:
What distinguishes the Maulbronn market from other craft fairs is its conceptual focus on demonstrations. Many vendors show their techniques live at workbenches and pottery wheels — the market is not called "Lebendiges Kunsthandwerk" (Living Crafts) by chance. Visitors can watch potters at the wheel, blacksmiths at the forge, bookbinders binding, weavers weaving. This makes the market an experience far beyond just a sales fair — a form of visible craftsmanship that is rarely found in our industrial daily lives.
Maulbronn, with around 6,500 inhabitants, is a small town in the Enzkreis district, located between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. The town's identity is shaped by the monastery — touristically, culturally, and economically. The monastery courtyard area is central and a natural gathering place for the local population. The craft market utilizes this backdrop with dignity and a sense of scale — not a cheap spectacle, but a serious artisan platform in a unique architectural setting.
This year's edition utilizes the extended Easter weekend for a full three-day program. Saturday, April 4th: 1 PM to 6 PM — Afternoon start. Sunday, April 5th: 11 AM to 6 PM — Full market day. Monday, April 6th (Easter Monday): 11 AM to 6 PM — Final day with the traditional family rush on Easter Monday.
Exhibitors are spread across the large monastery courtyard (weather-protected by the historic architecture, with market stalls in the open courtyard) and the adjacent Stadthalle (for fully weather-protected indoor exhibitors with delicate goods like fine glass, jewelry, or paper). Both venues are right next to each other and easily combinable on foot.
Many vendors show their techniques live at workbenches and pottery wheels. These demonstrations are the hallmark of the Maulbronn market and distinguish it from pure sales fairs — visitors experience how the crafts are made, ask the artists questions, and immerse themselves in the process.
Market admission: free. Craft purchases are paid directly at the stalls — price range is very wide, from €5 small items to several hundred euros for studio one-offs. Most vendors accept card and cash; cash is more convenient for smaller amounts. Optional: monastery tours with entrance ticket via maulbronn-erleben.de.
By car: A8 (Stuttgart–Karlsruhe) exit Mühlacker, then follow signs to Maulbronn. By train: Maulbronn-West station (S-Bahn), 10 min walk to the monastery courtyard. Parking is signposted around the monastery complex.

Come on Sunday or Monday morning — Saturday only starts at 1 PM, and the quieter morning hours are ideal for in-depth conversations with the artisans. If you're looking for a specific piece: the vendors are very approachable and offer competent advice. If you simply want to enjoy the monastery, combine your market visit with an official monastery tour (bookable at maulbronn.de). Wear sturdy shoes — the monastery courtyard is cobblestoned.
Guesthouses and hotels in Maulbronn, Mühlacker, Bretten, and Bruchsal. For the full monastery experience: stay in one of the historic inns directly on the monastery courtyard.
