Advent Market in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kloster Maulbronn — 2nd Advent
Kloster Maulbronn is one of the best-preserved Cistercian monasteries in Europe — founded in 1147, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The medieval walls, the monastery courtyard, the cloister, and the monastery church form an extraordinary backdrop for a Christmas market during Advent. The market in the monastery courtyard is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Southern Germany — precisely because the atmosphere is shaped by the medieval architecture, not by mass tourism.
Approximately 120 stalls populate the monastery courtyard: handmade arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, woodwork, ceramics, jewelry, wool textiles, leather goods, candles. Alongside culinary specialties — Swabian Maultaschen, potato pancakes, bratwurst, crêpes, gingerbread, and cookies. Mulled wine, eggnog, apple punch, and tea in special cups (deposit required) make a stroll through the monastery courtyard a distinctly festive experience.
Parallel to the market, Kloster Maulbronn offers special Advent tours. You won't just visit the courtyard, but also the cloister, the monastery church, the refectory, and the well chapel — areas that are only partially accessible in summer. The monastery church, where the monks and the Maulbronn boarding school once gathered, is particularly impressive in the Advent light. Monastery tours are subject to a fee (separate ticket).
Maulbronn is a town with just under 6,800 inhabitants in the Enzkreis district. The main attraction — the monastery — draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Maulbronn is also known for its Protestant theological boarding school (Seminar Maulbronn), a traditional school that Hermann Hesse once attended and depicted in his novel "Beneath the Wheel." Maulbronn is accessible by train via the Stuttgart-Bruchsal line (Mühlacker stop with bus connection).
The monastery courtyard transforms into an Advent market on the 2nd Advent weekend of 2026. 120 decorated stalls offer arts and crafts, food, and seasonal specialties. The medieval monastery complex is festively illuminated, with the atmosphere particularly shaped by the subdued light and the historic walls.
Advent tours are offered in a special format during Advent — you will enter areas of the monastery complex that are only partially accessible in summer. Tickets are available separately via kloster-maulbronn.de.
Market admission free. Mulled wine €4–€5 (cup deposit), food €4–€12, arts and crafts depending on the stall. Monastery tour separately approx. €9 for adults, €5 for concessions.
