Summer arts and crafts market in Tübingen's Old Town around the Nonnenhaus
The Metzgergasse, in Tübingen's historic center, connects the Holzmarkt quarter with the Neckar promenade and the market square. At its western end, it opens onto the Nonnenhaus – one of Tübingen's oldest half-timbered houses, dating back to the 13th/14th century. Here, in one of the university city's oldest alleys, the Kunstmarkt am Nonnenhaus takes place once a year.
The city of Tübingen annually invites around 40 artisans from the South German region. The range reflects what currently shapes the regional craft scene:
During the market (10 AM to 4 PM), the area between Metzgergasse and Nonnenhaus is closed to car traffic from 9 AM to 6 PM. The stalls are decorated, often with awnings and natural materials, so the market blends harmoniously into the medieval alleyway setting. Cafés and restaurants in the surrounding alleys provide culinary refreshments.
Tübingen is located in the Tübingen district on the middle reaches of the Neckar River and is, along with Heidelberg, one of South Germany's most famous university cities. The Eberhard Karls University (founded in 1477) shapes the cityscape to this day: students, research, a vibrant cultural and pub scene, and a well-preserved Old Town around the Rathausplatz, Marktplatz, and Stiftskirche form a dense urban fabric. The art market fits almost organically into this atmosphere.
The university city of Tübingen has scheduled the 2026 art market for Saturday, July 4th, from 10 AM to 4 PM. The venue, as usual, will be the Metzgergasse and the area around the Nonnenhaus; this zone will be car-free from 9 AM to 6 PM.
Over 40 selected exhibitors from the South German region will present handmade works. The city is responsible for selecting the exhibitors, focusing on originality, craftsmanship, and a distinct artistic viewpoint.
The current list of stalls and exhibitor overview will be published by the city before the market day on tuebingen-info.de.
