About Binger Rochusfest

The Binger Rochusfest is Europe's largest Rochus pilgrimage and one of the most important religious folk festivals on the Middle Rhine. From August 16 to 23, 2026, the Rochusberg high above Bingen am Rhein will be transformed into a pilgrimage site: for a whole week, services, meditations, vespers, and liturgical celebrations will take place at the Basilica of St. Martin on the mountain. In parallel, a culinary market will open around the basilica – with Bingen specialties such as Rhine wine, fish specialties, crêpes, and regional delicacies. The festival dates back to a vow made by the citizens of Bingen in the 17th century to combat the plague. To this day, it attracts thousands of pilgrims and guests, uniquely combining deep popular piety, Middle Rhine festival culture, and culinary conviviality high above the UNESCO World Heritage Valley.

The Binger Rochusfest is a religious folk festival with one of the longest unbroken pilgrimage traditions in Europe. It dates back to a vow made by the citizens of Bingen in the 17th century, in which the city pledged to dedicate an annual festival of thanks to Saint Roch, the patron saint against epidemics. Date 2026: August 16 to 23.

Pilgrimage to the Basilica of St. Martin

The venue is the Rochusberg high above Bingen am Rhein with the impressive Basilica of St. Martin. For a week, the basilica is the scene of services, meditations, vespers, and liturgical celebrations. Thousands of believers make the pilgrimage to Bingen from all over the region, some on foot from their home parishes.

Europe's Largest Rochus Pilgrimage

With its visitor numbers and tradition, the Binger Rochus Pilgrimage is considered the largest Rochus Pilgrimage in Europe. It is deeply rooted in the Catholic customs of the Diocese of Mainz and is organized by the pastor of Bingen together with the diocese and the city of Bingen am Rhein.

Culinary Market

A culinary market opens around the basilica during the festival. Bingen and Rhenish-Hessian vintners serve wine and sparkling wine, fish specialties – a reminder of Bingen's old Rhine fishing tradition – are served. There are also crêpes, classic folk festival catering, and regional delicacies. This creates a unique coexistence of piety and conviviality.

Unique Atmosphere

The Rochusfest offers an atmosphere that is rarely found elsewhere: pilgrims in prayer, families picnicking, vintners at the bar, pastors in solemn liturgy – all on the windy, sunny Rochusberg with a wide view over the Rhine valley. Hildegard von Bingen, the famous 12th-century mystic and natural scientist, already shaped this place.
