Three-week open-air culture series around Horn Castle in the Teutoburg Forest
If you are travelling through Ostwestfalen-Lippe in July, the Kultursommer Horn is a highly recommended stop. The event series takes place in Horn-Bad Meinberg – a twin town in the southwestern Lippe district, known for its spa tradition (Bad Meinberg) and the medieval townscape of the Horn district. The landmark is Horn Castle, a late Romanesque castle from the 13th century, whose mighty walls, gate towers, and town fortifications form the historic core.
The Kultursommer combines three independent cultural series into a three-week program. The Lange Kulturnacht (LKN) is the flagship event – an evening festival in the courtyards and rooms of Horn Castle with readings, small theatre performances, light installations, acoustic music, and spoken word. Local and national artists perform at several stations, and visitors wander between the acts. The official description from the city administration: "versatile, lively, fast, and at times spectacular".
Kunst am Wall uses the historic town wall as an open-air exhibition gallery. Artists from Lippe and beyond install sculptures, paintings, and land art objects along the wall and on the ramparts. The works remain accessible for several days and can be viewed freely. The format combines city history with contemporary visual art – a walk around the historic town centre becomes an exhibition visit.
The open-air concert series "Musik an der Mauer" offers live music against the backdrop of the castle and town walls. The program includes local bands from the Ostwestfalen music scene as well as national guest artists – the spectrum ranges from folk and jazz to singer-songwriters, pop, and indie. The concerts take place on summer evenings; the atmosphere benefits from the historic setting.
The Kultursommer is organized by the association In Horn Gemeinsam e.V. in cooperation with the Stadtmarketing Horn-Bad Meinberg. The association is one of the committed citizen initiatives that drive cultural life in small and medium-sized towns in OWL – with volunteer commitment, professional artist contacts, and a clear idea of cultural work as city identity. The program is curated annually; specific artists and performance dates are usually published in May/June.
The town is located on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest, the famous natural area where, according to legend, the Battle of Varus took place. The Hermannsdenkmal (Hermann Monument) is only a few kilometres away in Detmold. The tourist location – spa, hiking, nature – combined with the historic substance of the castle and town walls makes Horn an attractive summer destination. The Kultursommer fits perfectly into this picture as the cultural highlight of the summer.
