Alternative Art and Culture Christmas Market in southern Magdeburg
Magdeburg-Buckau, south of the city center between the Elbe river and the main train station, was a working-class district for decades, characterized by factory construction and an elevated railway bridge that divided the neighborhood in two. In the last twenty years, Buckau has become the city's creative hub – studios, social culture, a vibrant club scene. At its center: the Buckauer Kunst- und Kultur-Dilettanten (Buckau Art and Culture Amateurs), or BKKD, an association that has significantly shaped the district's cultural life since the mid-2000s.
The Christmas Spectacle is their calling card. Invented in 2007, the market has evolved from a small courtyard event into a fixed date in Magdeburg's Advent calendar. Every year on the third Saturday of Advent, the Engpass (Narrows) on Dorotheenstraße – the spot where the elevated railway bridge crosses the street – transforms into a market with over 50 exhibitors, 15 food vendors, and a program that has little in common with a classic mulled wine market.
'Alternative Christmas songs, unique street food, handmade art' – this is how the BKKD describes their approach. Specifically, this means: no mass-produced goods from Polish wholesalers, but handmade items from designers, potters, and carpenters from Magdeburg and the surrounding area. Instead of Schlager music, there are live bands from Magdeburg's independent scene; instead of Disney angels, their own angel parade, which marches through the Engpass in handmade costumes. The large bonfire in the center of the market has been its trademark for years.
The location makes the difference. The elevated railway bridge over Dorotheenstraße creates a semi-covered space where the atmosphere intensifies – weather-independent, acoustically interesting, with its own character. The bridge becomes the ceiling, the cobblestones the floor, and in the middle burns the fire. It is one of the most unusual Christmas market locations in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Buckauer Kunst- und Kultur-Dilettanten e.V. organizes several events throughout the year: the Buckau Summer Spectacle, concerts, readings, and exhibitions. Its members are artists, craftspeople, and activists from the district. Visitors to the Christmas Spectacle can combine their day in Buckau with a stroll through Halberstädter Straße, stop by one of the local pubs, or visit the nearby Florapark district.
As in previous years, the Buckauer Kunst- und Kultur-Dilettanten e.V. is organizing the market at the Engpass on Dorotheenstraße. The proven concept of alternative arts and crafts, regional street food, and an angel parade under the elevated railway bridge will continue in 2026. Live music from Magdeburg bands from the independent scene, a bonfire, and a Christmas procession will round off the program.
The exact program and final date will be published at bkkd-md.de/weihnachtsspektakel.
