Neighborhood market with direct producers, arts and crafts, and live music
The Thiemmarkt is neither a classic weekly market nor an overly organized city festival. It's a neighborhood market in the best sense: twice a year – once in spring, once in autumn – residents, artists, direct producers, street food chefs, and DJs set up their stalls around Thiemplatz in Magdeburg's Buckau district. The concept comes from the association Buckau e.V., which has been organizing social and cultural life in the district on a voluntary basis for years.
Instead of mass-produced goods, the focus here is on quality. You'll find ceramics from regional workshops, handmade jewelry, art, self-sewn fashion, vinyl records, second-hand treasures, and vintage furniture. Alongside these are street food stalls with regional, often sustainable ingredients, and a small stage with live music. The spring edition 2026 is already confirmed: Clifford Brown and the Getaway will play country, followed by DJ Polylux76 with contemporary beats. Poetry readings and performances will complement the program.
Buckau is one of Magdeburg's most interesting districts: a former working-class and industrial area, now interspersed with artist studios, cafés, cultural centers (like the Volksbad), and an active resident community. Thiemplatz is the social heart of this movement. It's named after Bruno Thiem (1823–1913), the mayor of Buckau between 1862 and 1887, during whose tenure the population grew from 6,000 to 17,500. Today, the market builds on this tradition of local self-organization.
The market is financed through stall fees for street food vendors (€50) and donations – artists and craftspeople pay no fees. The organizer is Buckau e.V., registration via [email protected]. For Magdeburg, the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Thiemmarkt is a model for how an urban quarter can animate itself without sponsor pressure.
The spring Thiemmarkt 2026 brings Buckau back to the square on the last Sunday of April. Six hours of market activity, live music, street food, and arts and crafts – curated by the Buckau e.V. association. The second edition follows in autumn 2026, with the exact date to be announced on buckau.com in the summer.
Further acts and stalls will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event at buckau.com/thiemmarkt.
