Volksfest on the Schießwasen parallel to the Kinderzeche
The Volksfest Dinkelsbühl on the Schießwasen is closely linked to the Kinderzeche – the historical festival play that is celebrated annually on the weekends around the third Monday in July in the medieval city of Dinkelsbühl in the district of Ansbach. The Kinderzeche is recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage and commemorates the legend according to which children saved the city from destruction during the Thirty Years' War.
While the historical festival play with its procession and camp life takes place in the old town, the Schießwasen is the venue for the Volksfest. Here, an amusement park with rides, a large festival tent, and numerous showmen provide for exuberant festival days. Both events complement each other to form one of the most important city festivals in Franconia.
The Volksfest is traditionally opened on Friday evening: The Dinkelsbühl city band plays on the Weinmarkt, marches to the festival tent, and around 6:30 PM, the ceremonial beer tapping and festival beer tasting follow. A grand fireworks display marks the grand finale.
The Volksfest combines Bavarian festival culture with the unique history of Dinkelsbühl. It attracts visitors from the entire district of Ansbach and far beyond and is an expression of the vibrant identity of one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns.
The Volksfest Dinkelsbühl 2026 on the Schießwasen is part of the Kinderzeche festival week, which takes place from July 17 to 26, 2026. The Volksfest opens on Friday evening: The Dinkelsbühl city band plays on the Weinmarkt and marches to the festival tent; around 6:30 PM, the beer tapping and festival beer tasting follow. The amusement park, the large festival tent, and showmen ensure a festive atmosphere over the festival days, and fireworks provide the grand finale. The exact Volksfest dates depend on the Kinderzeche program.
Dinkelsbühl is located in the district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia, on the Romantic Road. Arrive by car via the B 25; the Schießwasen is located near the historic old town. By train to Ansbach or Crailsheim, then continue by bus.
