The entire old town in historic costume – farmers' market, combat demonstrations, and crafts from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
Dinkelsbühl is considered one of the best-preserved late medieval townscapes in Germany. The complete city wall with 16 towers and four gates, St. George's Minster (1448–1499), and the countless half-timbered houses remained undamaged in both World Wars. During the Historic Town Festival, this backdrop becomes a vibrant stage: Dinkelsbühl citizens and guest groups wear authentic costumes from the 14th to 19th centuries, market squares turn into farmers' and craft markets, and jugglers, ballad singers, and musicians roam the alleys.
The program combines reenactment and market:
A culinary tribute to Franconian tradition: Hitzplootz (crispy flatbread with bacon and onions), Ofenschlupfer (sweet bread pudding), Dinkel soup, spelt pastries, medieval mead variations, and dark beer from local breweries. Vegetarian dishes are also available.
The Historic Town Festival coincides with the nationwide Tag des offenen Denkmals (Open Monument Day), which in 2026 will be under the motto "Power and Splendor." Guided tours along the city wall and through normally closed monuments complement the festival program. Admission is free.
The Historic Town Festival Dinkelsbühl follows a fixed dramaturgy over two days each year. Citizens and guest groups from all over Southern Germany wear historical costumes, and the market squares become scenes of a Free Imperial City from the 14th to 19th centuries. The Stadtkapelle Dinkelsbühl and the famous Knabenkapelle play marches and dance music. Combat demonstrations by the Fratres Armorum, folk dances, and the Wilde Horde wander through the alleys.
In 2026, the town festival coincides with the Tag des offenen Denkmals (Open Monument Day) (motto: Power and Splendor), with additional guided tours of the city wall along the largely preserved medieval fortifications.
The exact hourly schedule and participating guest groups will be published by the Dinkelsbühl Tourist Service approximately eight weeks before the town festival on tourismus-dinkelsbuehl.de.
