Franconian Wine Tradition in the Steigerwald
Michelau im Steigerwald is a district of the municipality of Wiesentheid in the Kitzingen district in Lower Franconia — right in the heart of the Steigerwald, one of the most traditional Franconian wine-growing regions. The local winegrowers' association cultivates wine tradition with various festivals throughout the year; the Brunnenschoppen at the Hirtenbrunnen is one of them — an intimate, local event compared to the large Franconian wine festivals.
The Hirtenbrunnen as the Festival Site
The venue is the Hirtenbrunnen — a historic village fountain in the center of Michelau. The fountain with its classic stone facade and the surrounding paved area provides an intimate setting for a wine festival. Refreshments are served directly at the fountain with simple wooden tables and benches — no marquee setup, but an open-air atmosphere.
Franconian Wines from the Producer
The Michelau winegrowers' association serves Franconian wines directly from local vintners. Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are among the most important grape varieties in the region, supplemented by Bacchus, Domina, and occasionally red wines. The "Schoppen" — the Franconian term for a 0.25-liter glass of wine in the distinctive Bocksbeutel bottle style — gives the festival its name.
Franconian Snacks
Accompanying these are Franconian snacks: Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Schäuferla (pork shoulder), cold cuts, cheese, bread. Some editions supplement the offering with sweets from the village community.
Michelau im Steigerwald
Michelau im Steigerwald is a district of Wiesentheid in the Kitzingen district. The area belongs to the Bavarian wine region and is firmly anchored in the Franconian wine atlas. The Steigerwald Nature Park with its forests and vineyards shapes the rural identity.
