Spring Kick-off in the Steigerwald
The Ebrach Monastery Spring Market annually heralds the arrival of spring in the Steigerwald on Palm Sunday. The venue is the impressive former Cistercian Abbey, which has shaped the townscape of Ebrach (Bamberg district) since the 12th century. Around the monastery courtyard, monastery church, and orangery, a colorful market emerges with stalls, music, tours, and family activities.
Market and Arts and Crafts
Local vendors present arts and crafts, spring decorations, regional specialties, and culinary delights from the Franconian Steigerwald in the market square. The Steigerwald musicians provide the musical atmosphere with their concert.
Monastery Tours and Exhibitions
During the market day, the market community offers free tours of the former abbey. The Ebrach History Museum and the special exhibition »Wilde Buchenwälder« (Wild Beech Forests) with guided tours of the »Spuren im Wald« (Traces in the Forest) exhibition are also open. In the orangery, the Cisterscapes Information Centre provides information about the cultural heritage of the Cistercians in Europe.
Family Program
For children and families, there is a children's carousel, craft activities, glitter tattoos, and face painting. The highlight in the afternoon is the Easter egg hunt in the monastery garden. A bird of prey and owl show complements the program; classic car enthusiasts from Seehöflein display their vehicles.
Ebrach – Monastery Village in the Steigerwald
The market town of Ebrach in the Bamberg district is located in the middle of the Steigerwald Nature Park and has been closely associated with the Cistercian Order since the Middle Ages. The former abbey is one of the most impressive monastery complexes in Bavaria and today houses, among other things, a correctional facility for young people – however, parts of the complex are accessible and open during the Monastery Spring Market.
