Eight flat races on the Raffelberg track — equestrian sport in the Ruhr area
Do you associate horse racing with English classics like Ascot or Epsom? In the Ruhr area, the Raffelberg Racecourse in Mülheim an der Ruhr has been preserving the tradition of German horse racing for over a century. The medl-Renntag in summer is one of the track's four major race Sundays — sponsored by the Mülheim energy provider medl, featuring eight thoroughbred gallopers, bookmaker bets, grandstand atmosphere, and a surprisingly broad family program.
The Raffelberg Racecourse in Mülheim-Speldorf opened in 1909 and is one of the oldest and most traditional racecourses in Germany. The 1,800-meter sand and grass track lies between Speldorf and the Ruhr river, clearly visible from the A40 motorway. With its over 110 years of history, it is not only a sports venue but also a piece of Mülheim's industrial city culture — the grandstand is a listed building, the atmosphere is relaxed.
The medl-Renntag 2026 features eight flat races — from maiden races for young horses to main races with higher prize money. First race at 11:15 AM, last race in the late afternoon. About 30 minutes break between races for betting, champagne, and walks in the parade ring, where you can inspect the horses up close.
Classic bookmaker stands along the grandstand, plus Toto bets at official counters. Minimum bet €2, all types of bets from win bet to V4 bet are possible. Those who have never bet on horse racing before can get a brief introduction from the bookmakers — the race day is explicitly suitable for beginners.
Contrary to some prejudices, the medl-Renntag is explicitly designed to be family-friendly. Bouncy castle, pony rides, face painting, and small play stations run parallel to the races. Admission for children up to 12 years is free, with discounted tickets for students and apprentices.
Mülheim an der Ruhr is an independent city in the administrative district of Düsseldorf, with around 170,000 inhabitants. The city is located between Duisburg, Essen, and Oberhausen, in the heart of the Ruhr area. Mülheim is easily accessible via the A40 motorway and by tram from Essen/Duisburg. The Rennclub Mülheim a.d. Ruhr e.V. is the organizer and one of the oldest flat racing clubs in Germany.
