Third island of the UTOPIE series — Theater an der Ruhr with stage and open-air program in Raffelbergpark, July 3 to 26, 2026
The Theater an der Ruhr in Mülheim has been one of the most important independent theaters in Germany since the 1980s — founded by director Roberto Ciulli with Helmut Schäfer and Gralf-Edzard Habben. Under Ciulli's direction, the venue developed into an international hub with guest performances in Iran, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, and a politically engaged program. For the 2025/26 season, the theater has conceived a three-part thematic series: UTOPIA — theater as a reflection on spaces of possibility in a seemingly dystopian present.
Each "island" has its own character. UTOPIE 3 is the summer block, which opens the theater geographically and atmospherically into the urban space: open-air in Raffelbergpark, walks, discussions, political encounters.
The productions deal with utopia and dystopia, societal spaces of possibility, collective imagination. Productions from the ensemble repertoire, in-house productions, revivals of earlier political plays, and new texts by contemporary authors.
The Raffelbergpark directly next to the theater becomes an extended stage: open-air performances, performance walks through the park, open-air readings, encounter and discourse formats. The connection between the park and the theater makes UTOPIE 3 a site-specific summer format.
Theater an der Ruhr is also always a house of discourse — lectures, discussion rounds, philosophical cafés, artist talks. In the UTOPIE 3 block, these formats are expanded, with guests from politics, science, and activism.
The Theater an der Ruhr runs several accompanying programs: VolXbühne (citizen theater platform), Junges Theater (youth theater ensemble), digital stage, theater flea market with costumes from four decades of production. These programs are partly integrated into UTOPIE 3.
The theater is an official location for ExtraSchicht 2026 (Night of Industrial Culture, end of June) — the program will be announced in May 2026. This makes the theater part of one of the most important major events in the Ruhr region.
The Theater an der Ruhr has existed since 1981. Director since its founding is Roberto Ciulli — a theater maker of international renown, with Italian roots and a school of ensemble theater that shapes the venue. The ensemble works together long-term, often for several years on a single production. This continuity makes the theater one of the most unusual in the German theater landscape.
Mülheim an der Ruhr is a city of around 170,000 inhabitants in the western Ruhr area, between Duisburg and Essen. Known for the Mülheimer Theatertage „Stücke“ (German-language drama festival), the Theater an der Ruhr, its industrial and harbor culture on the Ruhr river, and the nearby Broich Castle. Akazienallee — where the theater is located — is in the western district of Speldorf, at the transition to Raffelbergpark.
UTOPIE 3 runs from July 3 to 26, 2026. Preceded by: UTOPIE 1 (November 2025) and UTOPIE 2 (February to April 2026). Theater an der Ruhr under director Roberto Ciulli.
Detailed program to be published by the theater in May 2026.
