The neighbourhood family festival around Styrum Castle and Aquarius Water Museum in Mülheim
Right in the heart of Mülheim-Styrum, nestled between Styrum Castle and the Aquarius Water Museum, the Family Festival takes place every June. It's part of Mülheim's "Ruhr Summer" event series and, at the same time, the most important neighbourhood festival in Styrum. You'll experience a classic community festival here, supported by clubs, initiatives, and over 200 volunteers.
Throughout the festival day, around 15 stage acts showcase their talents: a colourful mix of music, dance, and sports. The highlight is a grand street dance choreography by the National Vibes Dance School with 100 dancers led by Styrum dancer Simon Hüge – a spectacle that delights the audience every year.
Approximately 50 Mülheim clubs, schools, kindergartens, and initiatives are present with stands. They showcase their work, offer hands-on activities, and network with each other. It's a community festival that highlights the diverse engagement in Styrum.
For children, there are bouncy castles, a small children's area with changing facilities, sports stations, henna tattoos, and a face-painting stand. Bicycle checks are offered, along with water-themed stations around the Aquarius Water Museum for different age groups. Traditional bobbin lace making is demonstrated in the castle park.
The Aquarius Water Museum, housed in a former water tower right next to the castle, is the main partner of the festival. With interactive water stations, workshops, and special opening hours, it complements the family program with a scientific and playful component.
Three pillars support the festival: the Feldmann Foundation as a meeting place, the Styrum Community Association as the local anchor, and RWW (Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft) together with the Aquarius Water Museum. Over 200 volunteers work behind the scenes.
Styrum is one of Mülheim's northernmost neighbourhoods, with a mixed social structure and a long industrial past. Styrum Castle dates back to the 11th century and is a significant landmark. The Family Festival provides a central stage for the neighbourhood once a year, fostering encounters across generations, nationalities, and social milieus.
In 2026, the Feldmann Foundation, the Styrum Community Association, and RWW with the Aquarius Water Museum will continue the popular neighbourhood festival. Music, dance, and sports alternate on the stages, and 100 young dancers from the National Vibes Dance School perform in the street dance choreography led by Simon Hüge. Around 50 clubs, schools, and initiatives present themselves at the stands.
For children, there are bouncy castles, face painting stations, henna tattoos, and water activities at the Aquarius. A shuttle bus runs to Mülheim-Styrum station.
50 Mülheim clubs, schools, and initiatives will have stands on site all day.
