The Middle Ages Before the Renaissance Fortress
The Ritterspiele Lichtenau take place in one of Franconia's most impressive locations: at Lichtenau Fortress, a Renaissance fortress built in the 16th century with thick walls, embrasures, and towers. Lichtenau is located in the Ansbach district in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, and has around 3,800 inhabitants. The mighty fortress walls provide the perfect backdrop for the medieval spectacle on the adjacent Rezatwiesen meadows.
Over 300 Actors and a Grand Jousting Tournament
More than 300 actors in historically accurate costumes bring medieval life to life. Highlights include the jousting tournaments on horseback and the atmospheric night tournament on Friday evening. In addition, there are historical battles depicting the era from the Staufer dynasty to the Thirty Years' War, as well as the vibrant activities of craftsmen and jugglers.
Large Medieval Market
A large medieval market rounds off the festival: craftsmen showcase old techniques, market stalls offer goods and food from times long past, and camp groups provide insights into life in military camps. Jugglers, musicians, and minstrels provide entertainment between the program items.
Family-Friendly Spectacle
The Ritterspiele Lichtenau are considered one of Bavaria's most family-friendly medieval festivals. Children can explore knight camps, meet craftsmen, and participate in hands-on activities, playfully immersing themselves in the world of the Middle Ages. The Ritterspiele thus combine tradition, historical education, and entertainment into a cohesive family experience in the Ansbach district.
