Hocketse around the Bakehouse
The Backhaushocketse is one of the most traditional events in the Neubulach district of Liebelsberg (Calw district, state of Baden-Württemberg). It is organized by the Liebelsberger Sängerfreunde (Liebelsberg Singers' Friends), an active village association dedicated to preserving Swabian customs. The meeting point is the village square directly in front of the historic bakehouse – the building where the bread of Liebelsberg was baked for generations.
Wood-fired Oven Specialties at the Core
What sets the Backhaushocketse apart from other village festivals is the wood-fired oven cuisine. Traditional specialties are prepared directly on-site in the historic bakehouse:
- Freshly baked wood-fired bread in several varieties
- Onion cake according to an old family recipe
- Dinnele (Swabian equivalent of Flammkuchen)
- Sweet yeast dough variations from the bakehouse oven
Sociability in the Black Forest Highlands
Liebelsberg is located at about 600 meters in the northern Black Forest – a ridge between Calw and Bad Liebenzell. Its rural location shapes the character of the festival: no large stages, no anonymous mass events, but a real Swabian Hocketse where club members, neighbors, and guests from surrounding communities come together. Live music and a simple but atmospheric stage program round off the evening.
Commitment of the Singers' Friends
The singing club "Liebelsberger Sängerfreunde" has been committed to the cultural vibrancy of the village for many years. With the Backhaushocketse, it finances part of its club activities and at the same time ensures that the old bakehouse is preserved as the heart of the village.
