Germany celebrates: our picks for the weekend
Events and festivals across Germany on August 8–9, 2026 stretch from the Baltic coast to Lake Constance — we picked twelve worth the trip. Our favourite: the Rhein in Flammen® fireworks spectacle in Koblenz, which pulls half the city to the riverbank. But you don't need water nearby to have a good time — a metal airfield in Thuringia, a palace theatre in Munich and a triathlon in the middle of Bremen are all on the list too.

Rhein in Flammen® Koblenz: fireworks and a boat convoy at the Deutsches Eck
When up to 70 illuminated ships sail from Spay down the Rhine to the Deutsches Eck on Saturday evening, that's the highlight of Koblenz's summer festival. From August 7 to 9, 2026, the city turns into one long festival mile with music on several stages and riverside food and drink. Rhein in Flammen® is the largest and oldest edition of the famous Rhine fireworks series, with views of the Ehrenbreitstein fortress across the water.

Party.San Metal Open Air, Obermehler: 30 years of death, black and doom
Death metal, black metal, doom: at the Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield in northern Thuringia, Party.San Metal Open Air marks its 30th anniversary from August 6 to 8, 2026 under the motto 'Hell Is Here'. 57 bands are confirmed, headlined by Testament, Amorphis and Hypocrisy, alongside Marduk, Dark Funeral, Alcest and Celeste — a fixture of the German festival calendar. Kultursommer Salzgitter: Apocalyptica at Schloss Salder
Finnish cellists Apocalyptica play Schloss Salder's courtyard on Saturday, August 8, 2026, as part of Kultursommer Salzgitter. What began as a Metallica cover band from Helsinki has become its own musical brand, fusing classical string virtuosity with uncompromising metal — in an unusually intimate courtyard setting in Lower Saxony. Schützenfest Düsseldorf-Rath: marksmen's contest since 1925
Since 1925, the Bürger-Schützenverein has turned the Rather Broich into festival grounds — in 2026 from August 8 to 11, with a beer tent, funfair, marksmen's contest and a grand coronation ball. The evening before, August 7, the RATH Festival opens as a neighbourhood music warm-up to one of the most traditional folk festivals in Düsseldorf's district 6.

Bernemer Kerb Frankfurt: Bornheim's 419th church fair
419 uninterrupted editions: that's how Frankfurt's Bornheim district counts its Bernemer Kerb, celebrated August 7–12, 2026 around the Hoher Brunnen and Berger Straße. It kicks off Saturday at 6am with the Kerbbaum tree-raising, followed by a big parade that evening, an ecumenical service on Sunday and the traditional Gickelschmiss closing ritual.
45th Umsonst & Draußen Stuttgart: three days, free entry
Free entry all three days: from August 7 to 9, 2026, the Krehlstraße festival ground in Stuttgart-Vaihingen hosts the 45th Umsonst & Draußen, with live bands ranging from punk to indie to world music, a political forum, a village of local associations and a kids' programme — a Stuttgart summer classic run by dedicated volunteers. Summer festival at Schloss Nymphenburg: Shakespeare and Dürrenmatt outdoors
Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing' and Dürrenmatt's 'The Visit' share the stage from August 6 to 9, 2026, on the western edge of Munich, right next to Schloss Nymphenburg. Zauberhaftes St. Wendel: Europe's biggest street-magic contest
Street magicians from across Europe gather in St. Wendel's old town from August 7 to 9, 2026. On several stages by day and in the big open-air magic gala on Schloßplatz on Saturday night, they show off their craft — a format with barely a rival on Germany's festival calendar.
Duckstein Festival Lübeck: a floating stage on the Trave
A floating stage on the river Trave: until August 10, the riverside on the edge of Lübeck's old town becomes a free open-air culture festival, framed by international street-theatre companies, a craft market and upscale food stalls. If you're spending the weekend in northern Germany, there's still time to catch it through Sunday.
GEWOBA City Triathlon Bremen: a sports festival at the Europahafen
Swimming in the harbour basin, cycling through the new quarter, running along the Weser: on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Bremen's Europahafen in the Überseestadt district turns into an endurance arena. Freiluftkino Friedrichshain: cinema in a former East German amphitheatre
A nostalgic amphitheatre turned cinema: Berlin's Volkspark Friedrichshain is home to one of Germany's largest and oldest open-air cinemas, seating around 2,000.
