Europe's largest street magic festival, annually in St. Wendel's Old Town
Magical St. Wendel has been the largest festival for street magic in Europe since 2003 and one of the international highlights in the Saarland event calendar. The 24th edition will be celebrated in 2026. The organizer is the town of St. Wendel — the capital of the Sankt Wendel district in northern Saarland — under the artistic direction of magician Jakob Mathias.
Unlike stage magic, the focus here is on street art: direct contact with the audience, small formats, improvisation. Several action stages are set up throughout St. Wendel's Old Town — at Schloßplatz, Domplatz, in Schorlemerstraße, and at Brühl. The artists move from stage to stage, and the audience can wander and discover between performances.
Street magicians from all over Europe and beyond are invited. Comedy magic, classic card tricks, mentalism, manipulation, miniature illusions — the range is wide. The competitive nature ensures high quality: an international jury evaluates the performances and awards prizes. For many young magicians, St. Wendel is a career springboard.
The highlight is the Open-Air Magic Gala on Saturday evening on the Schloßplatz. Here, the best artists present their strongest program items to thousands of spectators under the open sky. The atmosphere in the historic square, framed by the Wendelinusdom (one of Saarland's most important Marian pilgrimages), is legendary.
St. Wendel is the district capital of the Sankt Wendel district and is located on Bostalsee, the largest reservoir in Saarland. The Old Town with the Wendelinusdom, Schloßplatz, and baroque townhouses offers the ideal backdrop for a street art festival. Those who are in the region during the festival weekend can combine their visit with a day at Bostalsee.
The festival runs practically non-stop for three days. Action stages in the Old Town during the day, and grand gala programs in the evening. In between, there is catering by local businesses, children's workshops, and opportunities to meet the artists.
For families (children love magic), for magic fans (professionals from Europe in one place), for culture enthusiasts (street art in one of Saarland's most beautiful old towns). Admission to the action stages is free; the evening gala shows require tickets.
