Finnish cello metallers Apocalyptica live in the Salder Castle courtyard
Apocalyptica was founded in 1993 by four students from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki who arranged Metallica songs for four cellos, achieving unexpected international success. The debut album “Plays Metallica by Four Cellos” sold millions and established a new subgenre. Over the years, Apocalyptica evolved into a distinct band with drums and original compositions, whose discography now includes numerous original studio albums alongside classical adaptations.
The combination of four cellists, drums, and occasional guest singers unfolds its full effect in the intimate setting of the Salder Castle courtyard. The natural acoustics of the historic walls and the warm atmosphere of a mild summer evening lend a unique dimension to the mostly dark, powerful compositions. Apocalyptica concerts are renowned for their virtuosic playing, intense stage presence, and spectacular lighting design.
The Apocalyptica concert on August 8th marks the crescendo of the main stage season for Kultursommer Salzgitter 2026. Following performances by Suzi Quatro, Schiller, Max Giesinger, Kamrad, and Christian Steiffen, the Finnish quartet concludes this year's concert series with a stylistically special highlight.
The Apocalyptica concert in Salzgitter-Salder is among the most anticipated performances of summer 2026. The band will present songs from their over 30-year career in the unusual configuration of four cellos plus drums – from early Metallica adaptations and original compositions with guest singers to instrumental classical arrangements. The spectacular light show and intense stage presence make every Apocalyptica performance an event.
The setlist includes classics like “Master of Puppets” (Metallica adaptation), “One,” “Nothing Else Matters,” original compositions like “Path,” “Hall of the Mountain King,” “Farewell,” and songs from the current studio repertoire. Characteristic is the symphonic power of the four cellos, complemented by drums and – depending on the tour – guest vocals.
