Three days, right across the old Hanseatic city. Bremen hosts Germany's main events for Unity Day on October 3 and 4, 2026. The city runs the central festival, with a pavilion mile for all 16 states and the constitutional bodies inside the Weser Stadium.

Unity Day Festival in Bremen

On 03.10.2026, Bremen takes on hosting duties for the national celebration, because the smallest and oldest republic in Germany holds the Bundesrat presidency this year. Downtown, the Schlachte riverside, the Osterdeich and the Weser Stadium turn into the stage for the Bürgerfest, under the motto "Many Strengths, One Country". Four different sites share three days of programme.

The centrepiece is the state mile along the Osterdeich, where all 16 federal states present their own pavilions and regional specialities. The blue-light mile gathers fire brigades, police and rescue services from across the country, while the maritime mile shows off vessels tied to the Hanseatic city's seafaring tradition.

Inside the Weser Stadium, the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, the federal government and the constitutional court present their work, turning democracy into something visitors can touch. Concert stages fill the Domshof, the stadium opens for living-room-style concerts, and a family zone with games and craft activities rounds out the programme.

The Senate expects between 300,000 and 400,000 guests from across Germany. Admission stays free, and officials recommend arriving by public transport given the scale of the crowds.

Volksfest Season and Regional Traditions

In Hamburg, the Wandsbek Oktoberfest fills a 4,500-seat tent with Spaten beer and the band Alarm through October 4, right in the middle of Hamburg's largest district, home to some 450,000 people. In Stuttgart, the Cannstatt Volksfest marks its 179th edition on the Cannstatter Wasen, born out of a famine crisis back in 1818, now spread across eight large tents with roughly 300 showmen's stalls and about four million expected visitors. In Altötting, the Altötting Kirta closes on October 4 in its 51st edition, serving Hell-Bräu festival beer in the Kirtastadl tent and Franconian wines in the Weinlaube.

On the Ahr, the Mayschoss wine festival opens on 3.10.26 with a warm-up evening; the Mayschoß-Altenahr winegrowers' cooperative, one of the oldest in the world with more than 150 years of history, pours its Pinot Noir and Riesling there through October 25. In Düsseldorf-Urdenbach, the harvest festival, run since the 1950s by the local civic association, ranks among the largest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia: on Sunday, around 40 groups and up to 2,000 participants parade through the streets in front of as many as 40,000 spectators, before Monday's traditional Blotschenball closes the event. By the reservoir in Losheim am See, Saarland, the medieval spectacle staged by the Heimdalls-Erben group brings knights, falconers and camels to the shore for its 11th edition, with the bands Spilldeyvel and Maleficius on stage.

In Chemnitz, the SCHLiNGEL film festival, running since 1996 and one of Europe's largest festivals for children and young audiences, screens more than 150 films from around the world in its 31st edition, across cinemas in the city centre. Berlin opens more than 50 sites across twelve districts, from the former AEG factory in Schöneweide to disused railway stations, for tours, concerts and silent discos as part of the Industrial Culture Festival, which closes on October 4. In Brandenburg an der Havel, runners take on the 42nd Beetzsee run along the Olympic regatta course, with distances ranging from a toddlers' dash to a half marathon.

The Cannstatt Volksfest in Stuttgart continues through October 11.
