About Erntedankfest Urdenbach

The Erntedankfest Düsseldorf-Urdenbach is one of the largest and most traditional harvest festivals in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since the 1950s, the Allgemeine Bürgerverein Urdenbach (ABVU) has hosted the festival annually on the first Sunday after Michaelmas (September 29th) – in 2026, this will be around Sunday, October 4th (4 days from Friday to Monday, the 'Blotschenball' Monday). The venue is the festival grounds 'Piels Loch' in the Urdenbach district (District 9). With a large parade on Sunday afternoon (40 groups, 1,500–2,000 participants), roast ox, wheelbarrow races in traditional costume, horse-drawn carriages, and the Blotschenball on Monday, the festival attracts up to 40,000 visitors annually – with national recognition and its own Wikipedia entry.

Düsseldorf's Largest Traditional Folk Festival

The Erntedankfest Düsseldorf-Urdenbach is one of the most impressive traditional folk festivals in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the Urdenbach district (District 9), the Allgemeine Bürgerverein Urdenbach 1898 e.V. (ABVU) has been celebrating a four-day harvest festival since the 1950s, which has long since gained recognition beyond southern Düsseldorf. Wikipedia lists the festival as one of the most significant harvest festivals in Germany.

October 2nd–4th, 2026 – First Sunday after Michaelmas

Date: Every year, the first Sunday after Michaelis Day (September 29th). In 2026, this Sunday falls on October 4th. The festival runs accordingly from Friday, October 2nd, to Monday, October 5th (Blotschenball Monday). The venue is the 'Piels Loch' festival grounds in Urdenbach, a traditional festival site on the edge of the district.

Sunday – The Parade

The highlight: the grand parade on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Approximately 40 groups with between 1,500 and 2,000 participants march through Urdenbach – with lovingly decorated tractors, historic horse-drawn carriages, decorated trailers, costume groups, schools, churches, clubs, and traditional dance groups. The streets of Urdenbach are adorned with straw garlands, flowers, and harvest symbols; houses are also elaborately decorated. Up to 40,000 spectators line the parade route.

Roast Ox, Wheelbarrow Races, Blotschenball

A traditional program unfolds over the four festival days:

  • Friday: Ecumenical harvest thanksgiving service
  • Saturday evening: Dance evening with DJ and live band in the festival tent
  • Sunday: Sunday morning pint from 11:00 AM, roast ox at noon, parade at 2:00 PM, wheelbarrow races in traditional costume in the late afternoon, dance evening
  • Monday: Blotschenball with the crowning of the new king and queen ('Blotsche' = Low Rhenish word for wooden clog – the namesake symbol)

1,500 to 2,000 Participants – A District Event

What distinguishes the festival is the involvement of the local community. Unlike commercial folk festivals, the Erntedankfest relies almost entirely on the voluntary efforts of the district's residents. Clubs, schools, churches, scouts, shooting guilds, traditional folklore groups, and families sustain the festival – in historical costumes, with decorated floats, and singing songs that grandparents and great-grandparents once sang.

Traditional Farming Community in Southern Düsseldorf

Originally, Urdenbach was a farming community on the Rhine – with fruit and vegetable cultivation, cattle, and dairy farming. As agriculture declined in the 20th century, the Erntedankfest also faced the threat of extinction. The ABVU has preserved it and shaped it into a form that today makes Urdenbach's village identity visible despite its urban surroundings. District consciousness here is not explained; it is experienced.

Traffic and Safety

During the parade on Sunday afternoon, all access roads to Urdenbach are closed from 11:00 AM to approx. 6:00 PM. Absolute no-stopping zone along the parade route. Travel by public transport (line 707 from Düsseldorf Hbf) is expressly recommended.

Düsseldorf-Urdenbach – District 9

Urdenbach is located in southern Düsseldorf (District 9), directly on the Rhine, between Garath, Benrath, and the city limits of Monheim. The district retains its village character – with half-timbered houses, the Urdenbacher Kämpe (nature reserve on the Rhine), and Benrath Palace in close proximity. The Erntedankfest is its most famous event.
