Berlin's Eid-al-Fitr City Festival in the heart of Neukölln
Eid al-Fitr — known as “Şeker Bayramı” in Turkish and “Sugar Feast” in German — marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and is the second most important Islamic festival after Eid al-Adha. While Eid is traditionally celebrated within families and mosques in Berlin, a large public city festival has been held for several years on Hermannplatz in the Neukölln district, initiated by Jüttner Entertainment and supported by the district administration.
Hermannplatz marks the border between the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Neukölln, situated in the Neukölln (Nord) locality. The area around the square is concentrated with Turkish, Arabic, and Kurdish shops, eateries, and bakeries — one of Berlin's most densely migrant-influenced commercial landscapes. The Karstadt department store on the square is an architectural landmark. Hermannplatz is therefore the logical location for the festival: it's where many Berliners who celebrate Eid privately live and work, and it's where the festival becomes publicly visible.
Unlike religious Eid prayers in mosques, the Zuckerfest am Hermannplatz is a secular city festival with a cultural connection. It is aimed at families, children, and all Berliners — religious affiliation plays no role. Those who celebrate Eid will find community here; those who are unfamiliar with it will find a good opportunity for a first encounter with the most significant Islamic festival tradition.
Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on March 20th to 22nd, and the public city festival at Hermannplatz will follow this calendar. Organizer Jüttner Entertainment (Hauptstadtkultur) is holding the event with the approval of the Neukölln district on the square in front of the Karstadt building.
Program 2026: Amusement rides (bungee trampoline, giant slide, children's carousel, duck fishing), a live stage with music, dance, and hosting, food stalls offering Turkish, Arabic, Lebanese, and Kurdish cuisine, as well as classic festival fare. Free admission. Detailed program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on hauptstadtkultur.berlin.
Free admission. Amusement rides approx. €3–5 per ride, food stalls at moderate prices (Bratwurst €4, Pide €6–8, Falafel plate €8–10). Cash recommended.
U7/U8 Hermannplatz (exit directly at the festival grounds), Bus M41/M29/171. Difficult by car — Hermannplatz becomes a pedestrian zone during the festival, and parking spaces in the vicinity are scarce.
Completely free. Payment is only required for amusement rides (€3–5/ride) and at food stalls.
Saturday 12 PM–8 PM, Sunday 12 PM–6 PM — exact weekend schedule depends on the lunar calendar (Eid 2026: Friday, March 20th to Sunday, March 22nd).
Family festival, very child-friendly. Awareness teams on site. Cash recommended — many stalls do not accept card payments.
