Living Communal Brewing Tradition in the Zoiglstuben
Zoigl is more than just a beer: it's a living communal brewing tradition of the Northern Upper Palatinate. In the communal brewery, the Zoigl brewers brew their unfiltered, natural beer and serve it in rotation in their private Zoiglstuben. A displayed six-pointed Zoiglstern (beer sign) indicates which tavern is currently open. Windischeschenbach is considered the stronghold of this tradition.
In 2026, five Zoiglstuben will be active in Windischeschenbach: Schlosshof (daily from 10 AM), Binner (daily from 10 AM), Beim Gloser (evening service 5–10 PM, Fridays and Mondays from 2 PM), Zum Roudn (weekends), and Fiedlschneider (multi-day serving periods). The season runs from mid-May to late December; the taverns serve according to a rotating schedule, ensuring Zoigl can be tasted throughout the season.
Windischeschenbach is located in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, in the state of Bavaria, in the Northern Upper Palatinate. The district of Neuhaus with its castle and the neighboring communal brewery shape the region — the Zoigl culture is recognized as intangible cultural heritage and makes Windischeschenbach famous far beyond the Upper Palatinate.
In 2026, five Zoiglstuben are active in Windischeschenbach throughout the entire season. They serve in rotation, ensuring that Zoigl can be tasted almost continuously from mid-May to December — always when the six-pointed Zoiglstern is displayed at the tavern.
The Schlosshof and Binner taverns are open daily from 10 AM on their serving days. Beim Gloser offers evening service from 5 PM to 10 PM, and from 2 PM on Fridays and Mondays. Zum Roudn serves on weekends, and Fiedlschneider during multi-day periods. The exact, rotating serving calendar for 2026 (which tavern is open on which days) will be continuously updated.
